so my license was suspended for 2 weeks and i didnt get to drive my car... how ever i did start it every day just to listen to her, she was lonely. anyway i get my license back and im on the road now, and sometimes when i shift it either

A.stays at the rpm where i shifted from

B.revs higher than where it was

or, while im driving on the highway or something, it decides it doesnt want to decel and pretends it has cruise control


what could that be... how can i help it... what do i need to do

sticky throttle linkage... damn it i knew my friends liked it a little too much when i was listening to my new blow off, they were standing close while i was revving hahahah, no but seriously... what can i do to fix it???

I have this every once in a while. I usually just floor it once and it goes back to normal. VERY intermittent with mine though, like I get it .5 times out of 10. hah

yeah... maby its just sticking. because i do that too... then it goes away hahahah, but it will come back some times and make me look like a honda driver... its sounds nasty when i shift like im power shifting, but im not

There are two adjusting nuts on the BOTTOM line on the throttle bracket. Adjust those to make it tighter I believe. So if you're looking at it from the front bumper, you're going to want to tighten to make them go LEFT.

Not slamming you but unless you're 100% sure on this please don't "guess" for something as critical that has such a high potential for disaster.

so just tighten them...



ok so i used to ride BMX bikes and when the brake cable would fray inside of the cable housing, it would feel sloppy and not want to go back in, could i just need a new throttle cable???? just a thought.
...and thanks IJ for possibly saving my life

No prob, we can never be 100% sure unless the car in question is right in front of us.

Josh: There's a good chance the cable could be frayed/sticky and would probably be a good idea to replace it anyway (min 15 years old by now)

My car used to blow the Butterfly open at high boost and it scared the crap out of me a few times so it's NOT something you want to mess around with "my brothers girlfriends sisters cousin had this problem......" sort of advice.

For something like this you need someone that's worked on this specific area and has detailed step by step instructions to a fix.

Replacing the cable can't hurt so go for it!

I picked up some spray lube - not WD40, I'm not fond of that cocktail - pulled the caps off the end of the cables from the throttle and the cruise control, and sprayed some up in there.

At the same time, I hit all the moving parts on the throttle linkage, then worked them back and forth a bit.

Slid the caps back on and it's been good ever since.

There is a steel rod that goes from the linkage to the actual throttle, and it's held on with little spring clips - you just pry it off. Then check that the throttle itself isn't what's sticky by moving it independent of the linkage. Don't forget to pop it back on, or you'll have some problems accelerating!

Edit: I'd test it in neutral while the car isn't moving, if I were you. And have someone ready to kill the engine if it tries to over rev.

grim jack... your not so grim, i like you and that was very helpful, thanks a lot, i shall do that later on today, i used that same spray shit for my bike back in the day, but i need to replace the cable in general... IJ is right its 18 years old....so i mean... i gotta do it anyway, but untill i can get it i shall spray like no tomorrow

You need to go out to the car and closely inspect the throttle linkage with the engine off. Work it from under the hood by hand, and find the sticky point. There's a few places where it could be. You could spray it down with a good penetrating oil to clean it(cover the plug wires with some rags), and then lube it with some cable lube. If you think its the cable, disconnect it from the throttle linkage and push it in and out a few times. You'll know if its sticking, or running nice and smooth.
