I burnt my #1 piston. i beleive i had a blown head gasket...but wasnt sure...and i had an old school knob AFC i was trying to tune with, 550/lex, but no wideband yet.
I was racing, the car got Hot...i let it cool down for a minute, but deffinatly not enough and i know it was running lean prolly......and i raced again, didnt feel anything, but maybe sputtering, but i think it was caused by a wierd afm...
and then i was driving and it was smoking and kinda sputtering, and the engine sounded kinda bad, thought i put a hole in the block...but nope. i still drove my car for about 2 weeks, then decided to tear it apart, see what happened, and yup, BHG on the first 3 cylinders and #1 piston melted on the exhaust side.

I cracked ringlands on a couple of cheapie cast aftermarket pistons. Not sure what the exact cause was, not a lot of signs of detonation elsewhere.

Yes as long as the Dyno Operator caught it going lean and shut down.
(Ceramic will only help for a short time at those temps)

so a ceramic coated cast would give just a wee bit better safety barrier than regular cast, but still below a forged capaibility?

I come from a land down under
Where the forged will win hands down is in detonation resistance.

In an ideal world your motor wouldn't see either a Lean condition or Detonation but we don't live in that world ;)
