Ive heard them called idiot lights?

What is connected to the other end of that light circuit that knows when your oil just isnt 'cutting it' anymore?

In most older systems it's based upon simple mileage. There area few newer systems (BMW's Condition Based Service System and GM's Oil Life System as examples) that factor in driving conditions. However they are all "guesses". None of these cars are running around with a hidden gas chromatograph actually testing your oil and doing a TBN analysis...

None of the systems are aware of the quality or type of oil you've installed, only factors like temperature, rpm and road speed...

The BMW system also performs an "oil quality test" via the electrical conductivity of the oil. As the add pack wears out, and contaminants take up residence in the oil, the resistance of the fluid changes. BMW says they've found this to be more accurate. (Btw: The BMW system will always suggest a change once you hit 15.5K miles without a reset regardless of what it thinks of the oil...)

None of these cars are running around with a hidden gas chromatograph actually testing your oil and doing a TBN analysis...

None of the systems are truly aware of the quality or type of oil you've installed or the actual useful life left in it, they are only guessing.

The GM system takes into account the number of cold starts, number of engine revolutions, etc.

And that the customer uses dexos aproved oil. I forsee allot of them having their warranty voided. :biglaugh:

why do the oil lights come on at different mileages when using different brands of oil?
same filters used and same 80 mile trips to work 5 days a week on each vehicle?

Perhaps because they weren't reset correctly? No reason a different oil or filter brand would cause the light interval to change...

All these people running 10w-30 or 40... Makes me sad.

No kidding. Same here.

Saying you run a base 10 oil shows you're not aware what that number means. Saying you run a 40 hot oil shows you either have a trashed engine you're trying to limp along, you have a race built engine that only sees track days (pretty sure that's less than 0.1% people on here) OR finally, and most likely, you dont understand what that number means.

Run six. I always run six quarts in a 2J.

So, my engine leaks a little oil from the oil pan seal I *think*. I did an oil change this spring with 5w40... did I do wrong?

By a little, I mean that if I drive the car fairly hard and then park it overnight, there are 2 or 3 drops under the car in the morning. If I drive it easy - no drops.
