ok, so today on the way home im getting ready to spool the turbo up(recent hg replacment!! just hit 600 miles. figured id give it a couple of psi.) and i get this horrable shudder and jerking. at first i thought my clutch was shot again! but it moved and shifted fine. then i noticed that if i was on the gas just enough to keep it moving it went away.

anyhow, i pull over and start to look under the car to find that theres only the bottom 2 bolts holding the diff unit in place. F*#K!!!!!!!!!!!!

so i get it babyed home and inspedt farther. the front 2 bolt holes had ripped free from the sub frame. the 2 bolts at the top of the diff had broke free. and the driver side of the lower 2 diff bolts at the rear had cracked the subframe slightly.

long story short, im looking for ideas on hoe to weld the rear sub frame to make it a lil stronger. i dont want to sell the car, but im on a time frame and cash is also short, and its my only car at the moment. any help is welcome.

Undo the 6 bolts that hold the subframe up and find someone with a welder and have them come and weld them up. Hopefully a friend has a welder so it it will be priceless :^). Just try to make sure you don't put a lot of heat into it cuase it may end up warping and bolt holes may not line up when u get to put it back together. I highly doubt that it will get that extreme but its always good to take precautons. goodluck.

i wish it was gonna be that simple. i have the welder here, but time and accurate welding is going to be the thing. i dont want to do this again in a few weeks. im also looking to reinforce it a lil while im at it.

It will not crack if you brace it better. Just buy some 3/16 plate about 2" wide and strengthen all the weak spots. If you replace it with another sub frame that one will crack the same way as the one you have now.

A little crack? That's nothing LOL
Look at this one I fixed! We didn't get pics of it finished because it was 2am and I wanted to get it back in the car but when it was done all the parts I fixed were stronger then they were to begin with, and I filled in some places Toyota didn't weld that they should have. The diff was hanging on by only the lower rear bolts when we pulled it out!

Nash, I know you know what you are doing and the sub frame you did looks good, but would you please get a spell check program?

I sent you a link to a free one already!

hey, lets leave nash out of this. this thread was not ment to slam on someone because of there spelling. shit, i cant spell that great either.

anyhow, thats what im looking into doing, reinforcing and repairing my sub frame till i can find a replacement. only lead ive had is a free be that will cost me around $600 just to ship it from australia. (and thanks IJ, yeah, he is still learking in the shadows.) id do it but its just not in my funds range at the moment. damn, i dont want to sell the car because of somthing like this.
fresh clutch, 2 week old head gasket. fresh slave cyl. new starter.

i just need it to be able to run again. its my only car.

damn, i need another car and another drink.

well, after a few hours of welding today, it broke free again. not more than 3 feet from where i did it at. guess there was a lil too much gear lube everywhere. not to mention the cv greease from the inners poping loose.

hope it will make it to the shop tomorrow.

I would suggest cleaning properly....If you weld overtop of grease and oil, you are introducing a huge amount of carbon into the steel, contributing to brittleness. Go over it with a wire knot wheel before and between weld passes. Also, let the steel cool by itself, no water or anything else, and you should be fine.
