it is possible, im not sure as to what threads there are but i am going through this swap right now. i was previously automatic but i wanted a 5 speed. came across a good deal on a 88 5spd with a blown engine which had everything i need for 400 so now i have a parts car. however it will not hold as much hp as a r154. here is a thread that will help with wiring though http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64778 basically youre going to need all the same swap parts as a r154 swap but the parts for w58 instead.

I'm running a 7MGTE with a W58. I've been told I should be around 300hp+. My W58 is holding up just fine!

IIRC, it should bolt right up, but the speedo will be off.

im running a w58 but if you could go r154 they are a lot stornger support more hp. mine is already going bad 2nd gears hard to get into and 3rd and 4th gears synchros are going out but besides that its been reliable if its not going to beaton on and your plans do not go above 300+ hp

I have a W58 behind my 7mgte. My car is an 85 MK2 with the stock 85 W58 tranny.

I used the W58 flywheel and a centerforce Dual friction clutch for a MK4 N/A supra that came with a W58. Mine is holding up great. I have 550's,vpc,afc,sp61gt,3" blah blah blah....some will say they wont hold up and some will....depends on the condtion of the W58 before you put the power through it...Mine is holding up great...HTH.

Don't put a W58 in your Supra. Especially since you are already at 310 RWHP and I'm assuming have plans for even more power. Save yourself the time and money and just put in an R154. I have over 310 RWHP that is going through my R154 and it is holding up like a champ without any issues. Seriously, why install a weak part when you can get a much stronger part for not much more?

I'm putting down 400 whp with a W58 and have encountered no problems. I have to add that I have never launched the car and do not drive like a dick. Also, I'm at 39,000 miles from new on my 88 MKIII.

not even worth it.. buy a 154 and put it in... the only reason users here have no issues is because they know about the situation and dont launch.. if you start launching all the time then you WILL see some issues sooo.

theres a reason they didnt match the w58 with the gte..

go 154 and that way your already set for future mods.

The Supra came with the 1GGTE at 210 hp stock with a w58 transmission in 1986 and I saw one that was a MKII in Japan, so the manufacturer is essentially saying that the w58 can hold at least that much. Add on 20% for the aftermarket that the Japanese have enjoyed since the end of WWII when Dr. Deming brought their new world order and you're looking at 251 hp. +/- 2. The Japanese judiciously under-rate the power of their cars, and do so because their aftermarket is prolific. We all know that the GTR can produce over 1000 hp. The Japanese publish a figure of 275 hp for all of their GTR's from R32,33,34, and R35 for legality reasons. The w58 was built for 200hp in the 7mge, and 210 hp in the 1ggte, I think the w58 will do o.k. as long as you don't build the motor past the drivetrain's capabilities. That's why honestabe, and Nomad707 warn of the continued use of the w58. Be aware though that the driveshafts are different as well I believe, so there is some homework to be done.

i have a 87 5spd (W58) and an 88 that was an auto but i swapped out to a 5spd (R154). you can literally feel the difference between the way the two drive. just by shifting you can tell the R154 was made for more power/torque. like pretty much everyones been telling you dont waste your time and money. just get the R154. the shifting isnt as smooth but its an amazing transmission. you will not regret it

I was pushing 289rwhp/295 rwtq through my w58 when I took the car off the road for restoration. :) (around 330-340bhp)

400 WHP and you don't ever launch it??? That's why the tranny isn't giving you issues. You aren't doing any WOT runs through the gears.

I do wide open throttle through the gears sonny.
You have a lot to learn.
When you refer to drag racing it is a different set of circumstances.
And don't even point a finger at me like I don't know as I have held National drag racing records with a Hemi Charger a long time ago.
I don't see Supra's as drag cars unless they are equipped with an automatic and a high stall converter.
Not everyone is chasing the same dream.
