Valve Clearances & Performance

Been searching for a definitive answer to this, but...say the valve clearances are out of spec - either too tight, or too loose, what sort of symptoms & impact does this have?

I'm guessing poor acceleration & throttle response as well as ticking noise?

I know too tight and you risk having the valve stuck partially open. Not sure if too loose affects anything other than excessively loud valve train and over time possibly extra wear on the cams. I guess they wouldn't be opening as far though either so technically it wouldn't be flowing as much air.

Tight=hung valves, burnt due to lack of cooling (by not contacting the valve seat), valve seat damage is also possible.

In Spec=happy engine

Loose= possible spitting shims if the cams are aggressive/high rpm, noise, lack of performance, emissions testing failure.

How's that been working out for you? I'd read through the oils and lubrication sub-forum sticky threads before putting in another drop of that stuff. ;)

Damn, gold mine.

I'll probably be doing my valves this weekend. I've got some spare shims, and of course the full complement that's already there, but now at least I can get the ones that I need.
