anyone here using a digital speedometer? i really dont feel like fixing my speedocable because of its tight location. Is there a way i can use my HKS turbo timer to view speed? i know they're capable of doing this just wouldnt know how to hook that up.
i know theres aftermarket senders but wouldnt know which one would fit.
any useful input will will be greatly appreciated.

replacing the speedo cable has got to be the easiest thing to do on the supra...hell its easier then changing a flat tire...took me 10 minutes at the most to do in my driveway

You must not be talking about the speedo cable that connects to the back on the speedometer behind the dashboard... (the one that most often breaks) ;).

i dont understand why people would rather just leave something broken on their car as opposed to fixing it. dont you want your supra to be nice?

+1. Something goes wrong, I *gasp* FIX it.

We're never going to get past the 'cheap ass MKIII owners' stigma, are we? :nono:

I'm a perfectionist.. I couldn't stand not having something working in my car.... the cigarette lighter ticks me off every time I'm in the car becuase the lighter won't stay in untill it's warmed up... next time I pull the centre dash out (when I swap out my deck) I'm going to replace the lighter socket... I've spent a whole day just getting little lights working, like in the ash tray, glove box, key ring, overhead lights, etc... to the extent of finding the broken wire and routing a new one for my glove box light that was broken, just to get that little green thing to light up when I look for something in my glove box.. never really use it but I know it works.

yup. dash comes out with about 6 screws. cable comes right out the back of the firewall. and unscrew from the tranny. speedo out!

have u ever tried replacing the speedo cable? i rather replace the whole system, there must be a reason why these break all the damn time. I do have a replacement cable ready to be installed but what if it breaks again?

Yeah, especially when it effects how the engine runs, as it will in this case. The reason they break "all the time" is lack of maintenance by either the previous or current owner. Mine is original. Lubing it every 50K is a bit of a hassle but at least I know I won't be buying a new one and going through the bigger hassle of changing it. Lubing speedo cables used to be standard practice years ago. You can still buy the "special" grease for it at any auto store.

they dont break all the time. mine has 89990 miles on it and still works. it was never replaced.

the reason they break is either due to old age, or more likely, when the tranny is removed they end up pulling on and bending the cable.

it isnt that hard to replace the entire cable. ive had my car completely apart, and while i havent had to replace my speedo cable yet i have had the car torn down to the point where i could have replaced it easily.

just suck it up and repair it the RIGHT way.

My car has 205k miles, and the speedo cable hasn't been replaced...it bounces slightly at certain speeds, but it's not a big deal.

Then lube it now before it breaks. And be sure you don't install it backwards assuming that can even be done on this car, I don't know. A common mistake on cars it where it can be done, running it backwards will unwind the inner cable. To avoid all this you can sub it with a teflon lined cable from a newer car.

Like Jet stated, lube it before it breaks. 99% chance that this will cure the bouncing. One thing to note though as I have had this happen to me is that the bouncing was actually from the speedo head unit itself causing the problem. There is a tension/calibration spring and a rotating magnet that are used to operate and calibrate the unit. One of those two items was the reason that mine was bouncing. Bouncing stated, so I lubed the cable, still there, so I changed the cable, still there, changed the head unit and problem was no longer there. reinstalled the original cable for shits and giggles and still worked flawlessly. Again, as I stated in the begining, 99% of the time it is the cable.

Jet, good point about putting it in backward, but IIRC, they cant be. Either way, still a good point and thing to know cause some can be and I speek from experiance that yes the can unwind themselves in the lining. Made that mistake once, dont think that I will do that again.

As for the topic of this thread, Yeah I guess that you could do it otherway, Like through GPS, or possibly using a signal from a ABS sensor if the car is equiped with ABS. Easiest though would be to change the cable and keep the car funtioning properly
