I have a 86.5 supra with a 7mgte that was put in 2 owners ago. Is it possible to know what year the engine was made or what year of supra it came out of? I found the engine serial number but I don't know how to read it. Do the serial numbers even contain the year?

90 model year = made in 89

Mine is an 89, but it's made in 88 so it has the old motor mounts, ect...

When you look in the EPC, it's wanting to know what month and year your car was made, not what model year it is.

what do you mean by this? explain what the difference is between a proper and a non proper engine swp and how it would affect the year?

Because, for example: If you installed a 1987 7MGTE into a 1992 Supra chassis, you'd need to use an 89.5-92 ECU/Wiring harness for it to function properly, and mate to the chassis on the electrical side. :)

So if you're looking at the connector colors, you'd assume the motor is a 90-92 block with a 7M crank and extra ribbing, when in fact it's a 87-89 block with a 6M crank and no extra ribbing. :)

If its swapped "correctly" i.e. sensors harness etc then you could not tell the engine year by plug color
