So I just got my HPF Full-Face Feramic Clutch, RPS pressure plate, Jawsgear 3.91 diff, Jaswgear AL 1pc DS and i'm getting the 5-spd swap done this weekend...

thing is my girlfriend wants to learn how to drive a stick now so she can drive my car.... and so does her sister....

should i let them learn how to drive a stick on my new clutch/pp, etc? Should I break it in first? or should i keep the noobs as far away as possible from my new tranny? :)

NO! Performance clutches chatter like a mofo, there is NO slipping them. So not only will it probably freak them out, but even seasoned 5-speed drivers have to kind of "re-learn" how to get over it, so you can imagine how it would go for someone just learning, haha. But if you decide to do it, do it AFTER it's all broken in :naughty:

very true about the chatter.

i learned how to drive with a 5sp and when i put my 6 puck in it took a little getting used to.

let them drive the car once they learn how to drive stick on something else.

the full face feramic is very easy to drive(had the exact same setup) my brother was amazed at the civility of the engagment but requires more leg effort nothing to bad. But I would not teach anyone how to drive stick with it im just picky on who I let drive my car, It says your are getting a new diff?or is it just the final gear?

syris, its a r154 ... just ordered the throw out bearing, slave/master cylinders and all the little clips, seals etc from toyota... don't wanna put those parts in used...

lintlars, it's a completely overhauled 3.91 diff by jawsgear, they overhauled everything i'm told.

i guess i'll break her in first and find another car they can learn the basics on, then i'll teach them how to really drive on my car ;)

Well, my number one rule about manual transmissions is never to teach people on your own :)

Seriously, I would consider finding out if anyone you knew in the area had one you could borrow. That said, there's a good chance that there won't be, so if the really wanna learn break it in so its real easy. Even the stock clutch is a bit rough to learn on. My grandfather, who's DD is a manual(and who's car I learned on), killed it a few times before he got it to roll.

And to save the tranny, I would have them practice holding it at about 2k rpms and then just have them slowly let the clutch out. Yeah, its not good for the clutch, but better than screwing up the tranny, right? The can progress to good technique once they've learned how to start the easy way :)

Just my 2 psi... (thx for the phrase Supracentral!)

hmmm i wonder if enterprise or budget rents out any 5-spd wimpy cars like chevy cavaliers or mazda protege's... maybe renting a car like that for a weekend for $100 and teaching them there is worth the money...

Go hire/borrow a little new car and let them learn in that it'll be cheaper in the long run!

I would've recommeded that, but how many people are gonna let you borrow their car so you can teach 2 newbies how to drive stick?

And I can't imagine what would happen to your insurance if you screw up a rental company's car by running it into a wall when they push the wrong pedal.....It'd be bad enough with your own.

Not to mention, generally you can't get manuals on the cheapest cars, you have to get the expensive performance ones. The Chevy Cavaliers & Aveos are all auto....

lol, I wish you could've told that to my dad! He threw me straight into the lion's den. I learned to drive a stick in a somewhat densely populated island town (ie. lots of stop and go traffic) and ended up stalling that beyotch in the middle of an intersection.

Derk: LOL I've taught lot's of people to drive from scratch and have always done it this way as it's far too easy to overload their brain as driving is one of the most complex tasks a human can do!

As with everything just because someone can do something (most drivers) that doesn't mean they can teach it well! ;)

I believe it!! lol

Glad you guys find my misfortune funny  . Hahah, nah, now I look back and laugh about it. At the time...it was one of the few times in my life that I yelled at my dad. There was just too much going on.

So like Ian said...find an empty parking lot or something like that :naughty:

I learned how to drive stick on the Supra driving it home from just buying it. That was fun. I stalled at the toll booth and found out real quick that the starter was going bad. I only stalled about 4 times in a half hour drive.
