Before you go for the re-bore, check the cylinder specs. Just might be able to get by with a re-hone, std dia pistions and call it a day ;)

A re-build has always been in my mind something that depends on the goals of the owner. 300 HP is easy on the stock components...they will actually hold much more. The HG has always been the weak link, but properly done it will meet your goal Kai. I would consider using ARP bolts...same for the rods, and mains...it's just good insurance.

Well, i'm working to a budget. If i weren't, i'd be able to throw more money at ARP hardware for the head - and i'm already planning on getting some for the block, both rods and mains :)

MHG for me, at this stage, would provide little to no benefit, and would cost a lot more than a composite one, hence the decision to go for an OEM one, albeit torqued down properly!
