Threw a rod, sad day in my life

So, on the way back with my girlfriend from a trip to Mexico, 5 miles away from home and my Supra or as I am calling it now until it is fixed "the red thing" makes a "weird" sound like metal to metal. I immediately pull over to the side of the road and I have next to no oil pressure (which I had noticed was low) but my temp gauge is sitting fine. Pop the hood and there is some boiling on the PVC area, coolant dumping out of the reservoir like no other and some boiling from the radiator cap area, all of a sudden coolant and water shoot up in the air about a good 10+ feet. Had a friend come pick us up and went home and cleared through a bottle of Vodka to "regroup my thoughts". Went back the next day and the car had been towed, got it out of impound ($136) and filled it with oil and water. Immediately saw water dumping out so I know I cracked the radiator, attempted to crank over to listen to sound, car starts but is the most nasty noise I have ever heard. Got it to the auto shop and just found out 2 hours ago that "It through a rod through the pan". So I need to do a rebuild, my 1st ever. I have the tools to accomplish it and the friends to help, but I'm just not sure what exactly needs to be rebuilt. Do I need a new oil pump and stuff like that, new cams? I know I will need a new gasket set, bearings, and rods. The car has a felpro head gasket and ARP head bolts, can they be reused or do I need new ones? Any help towards this is appreciated, as I think I know what parts I need (through searching other threads) but mainly want to know what to ask the machine shop to do and the little stuff. I merely want to bring the car back to stock, don't have any high HP goals in mind. If you are local and have a block with a BHG for sale and it would be easier to do that I guess let me know.

Cliff notes
1. Supra is dead
2. Shop says I put a rod through the pan
3. Oil pressure was low, temp was fine
4. Need to know what to buy and what to ask machine shop to do
5. Glad it happened 5 miles away from home and not while I was in Mexico

If it has indeed dropped a rod it's time for another motor..
So should I just look for a 7M-GTE with a blown head gasket and do the head gasket replacement and go that route?

That sucks man, but sounds like you got a great attitude about it. Just a couple things I can answer for ya real quick. No, you cant really reuse a Felpro (composite hg) but the ARP's should be fine to reuse, just run a tap into the threads on the block and a die down the bolts to clean the threads.

Machine work wise its too hard to say. Throwing a rod can be pretty destructive and my guess is the block is toast, plan on looking for another to build off of, or find someone here who is selling one thats already had the work done to it. But take it to a machine shop that knows about the 7M specifically first and get their opinion.

About the only thing you can do is start from the beginning, and do some research like you are now. GL and have some fun with it. It can be a long hard process. Try to enjoy it in some way.

if it threw a rod thru the pan...see if you can find a block on the forums and do a rebuild from there..this is your time to think of the goals you want from this engine..should you do the pistons now and get it over with? stuff like that..or do a strong stock rebuild if your horsepower goals isnt over 400hp..right now i am still deciding 1jz or stick to my 7m and do a whole rebuild..time will tell..goodluck

Get a new engine and make sure it is well built. (stock form or not as long as you have ARP's and good gasket)

2J is not always the answer although people think it is :3d_frown:

PS: Glad to hear it only broke a few miles away from home though :)

Moving on...I gotta say stay with the 7M. Its a great motor, its just got a bad rep.

+with all the idio...people going JZ series, 7M parts are a dime a dozen now.

2jz is THE motor to go nowadays... if you can't see that you're in denial. on that note i stayed 7m.

In denial? That is one stupid post. It sounds like you watch to many F&F movies there bud. I have done much research when doing what I did. It is the "THE" engine to go with..why? because it is a 2j :nono: I could go in to details about why each one is good for it's own reason but I won't. I am better off talking on the phone to better help you understand and the fact I want to keep his thread clean.

All in all, good luck with your engine and be wise in what you choose.

I'm almost wondering if Cyroslash was just being sarcastic with the note on "and on that note I stayed 7M", none the matter though, thank you to everyone that has been helping me, looks like I will be getting a block, rods, and pistons from jdub on the 17th, lots of learning ahead of me on doing my 1st rebuild.

Hey nordline, if you need any spare 7M parts in the future, let me know. In less than a couple of months I will have my old 7M out and a new one in. I will sell parts off of it for very cheap. Not really trying to macke much profit.. Right now I have 6 used piston and rods that are in good shape. Good luck getting it back together.

Maybe he was but I get annoyed when people say 2J is the way to go when in fact a 7M/1J can stay right with it. Nice to see you stuck with a 7M. It has been a great engine for me and I hope the same for you.

Duane's understatement of the century...lol. Yeah I am glad that I am staying 7M, just not the most aesthetically pleasing engine but that can be fixed with a Ron FFIM and the new C.O.P. sparkplug setup:)

no, staying 7m was a mistake, even though i like the motor to death. but in all honesty, i would go 2jz if i had to do it all over again.
Duane, Pm me your number, in which way is the 7m better then the 2jz, i want to hear your reasoning.
