that age old debate (swapping twins for single).. but with an asterisk.

my rear twin is finally producing the death wine on hot starts. now, I'm adept enough to realize that rebuilding the twins is expensive for the most part, switching to a single is a way better idea, right? indeed..

so, what the hell is the issue here? well...

I applied for a job to teach English in Japan and there's literally a 50/50 divide between getting or not getting the job. Obviously, if I could see the future, this would be a non-issue, but what would you folks do presented with the same problem? would you still dive headfirst into a single project knowing that you may have to let the car go come august (-end of summer)?

it just keeps occurring to me that I should rebuild the twins with T25 wheels or something more common than the OE Toyota parts because that still doesn't involve a manifold, WG, fuel upgrades, new DP, oil/water lines.

does that make me happy? not insanely, but from a monetary perspective and for futurability, it really does seem the best idea considering the situation.

I'm looking for opinions for and against these points, and they will be greatly appreciated. (I apologize for the redundancy of this debate.)

for reference:

$600 or so to rebuild twins, it can vary a lot depending on who does the work.
$1200 or so for single + accompanying mods, if I use something like a Holset HX35/40 or equivalent.

Why not pick up another set of used twins to tide you over until your employment decision is made?

It'd be silly to spend any more money than that if you're unsure about keeping the car.

What Wedge said. Can find used sets on here for anywhere from $100-200 quite often, but that's NOT a job I'd wanna do with the engine in the car. That's half the reason I plan on going with a single, I'm not big on the fustercluck that is our exhaust side of the engine.

I'v replaced my Stock twin for the jdm 2jz twins and i was very pleased with the results regretfully the twins i installed leaked oil like a sive. After dealing with both the stock twins and jdm twins I feel relived that theres now a Single on it now.

But in your situation I if you dont mind doing the work I would just find a cheap set to throw on and single when you find out about your job. But personally im pretty fed up with removing and installing those twins.

You could always keep everything and if when u get to japan buy a supra :D

grab a set of stock twins, many people unload them and go single while doing their swap, gonna be a bit of a pain to install, but for around $200 you cant go wrong with them given the situation

Interesting, I figured on not mentioning used twins due to how much work is involved in swapping them in and out versus an unknown amount of time they will last. But from a monetary perspective, I suppose that makes sense, and this opinion seems unanimous.

I bought stock twins to hold me over while I get bad stockers up graded. Me personally I would wait till I got to Japan before dumping any major money stateside. You will regret every dollar spent here when you see what they have to offer. Keep me posted on your decision. I want to retain the performance of twins. and would like to stick with stock housings for convenience and expense ( daughter is gonna be born in FEB)

yeah, I was of the same mind. I really don't plan on coming back to the U.S. anytime soon (if at all), so I've looked into buying a set of decent twins for now. I'll update as needed, but essentially the decision to buy another set is complete.

also, I own a Previa and have always wanted to say that one in your avatar is clean! for a while right after buying the supra, I considering converting the one we have to manual coupled with some Estima parts.. never got around to it though, haha.

It had blood all over the rear hatch area, the hot/cold box worked and it was supercharged. You would think being in Japan there would be hella options on twin upgrades. If you find options let me know. One of the reasons I went 1j is because I have to chase my buddies GTR up mountain roads and the 7m was way way way to laggy. I love the 1j's rev capacity. I love mountain drifting and gripping.
