Ummm I think that is a steering bump.. Toyota wants like 150-250 for them I think.. but it has been a while from when I asked. I just took mine off.

Actually it probably shouldn't even stay down if compressed, I am going to guess it should have some force since it is used to dampen the steering but I am sure someone on here knows the real facts.

Steering dampener/damper.

"A hydraulic device similar to a shock absorber attached to the steering linkage to absorb road shock and steering kickback."

Basically it keeps the steering wheel stable for you when you hit a pothole instead of having the wheel shimmy or pull.

Thats my understanding of it anyways.

I don't know the process of testing them, but I think it should offer equal resistance in both directions as it has to keep the wheels from being knocked back in and pulled outward.

Yup, it's the Steering Damper. P/N 45700-14010 MSRP $175.54

I'll look in my '88 TSRM and see if there's any testing info.

EDIT: The only thing I can find is the torque spec. The two bolts for it are supposed to be torqued using 20ft lbs and you're supposed to use thread locker on it.

If you know your ball joints, bushings and alignment are in good order, yet when you hit a bump on either side of the car the wheel tries to turn it may be the damper. The damper shouldn't cause the steering to pull one way of the other (unless it's seized). Perhaps someone wants to call up their friendly Toyota service dept. and ask for any tips to check it?

I have been running it off for over the last year.. and it was shot so I have been driving it with it now working and my steering has never been bad.

Or new tires, or a check to see if anything is bent, or a variety of other things .. :p

Could be a dragging brake pad, who knows .. A car pulling to 1 side isnt black and white for the problem.'

Thats like saying "my car isnt running right, what do I do" and you say "tune it.."

lol

That sounds like a power steering problem. Having to turn the wheel forever, and the not connected feel. Unfortunatly its the engines everyone wants not the power steering, these cars will always have a leak or problem with power steering.:biglaugh:

If you figure out what's causing your power steering to have so much play let me know. Mine's so sensitive that if I cough while driving on the highway, bam, I've made a lane change.

Chris: Sounds like tie rod ends. If you grab the tire, and try to turn it back and forth, is there alot of play before the other tire starts to move?
