I haven't posted much here, but I'm still dealing with trying to get my 89 Supra on the road. Back in March my son (was buying it from me) drove the car down to San Diego. When he got off the freeway, the car wouldn't idle. If you kept the revs about 1300, you could keep it from dieing on you. I drove down with my wife and drove the car home while my son went with his girlfriend.

After getting it home I told my son to start looking at the air intake system. Which obviously he didn't! :3d_frown: Instead, he told me everything looked fine and said he couldn't find anything wrong and needed to take to to the local independent Toyota shop.

He called me after picking it up from them that they said it was a bad fuel pump and filter and that it would be $700! :aigo: I told him no way was I going to pay $700 for a fuel pump, so to drive it home. He calls me a little later and now the car will not shift out of 1st. I was so pissed at the shop that I told him just call AAA and have the car dropped off at home.

So my son decided that he didn't want the car and that its back in my lap. My problem is that I haven't had anytime to even look at it... that was until last night. I wanted to start it up to get the fluids moving in it, and while I had it running around 1500 rpm, I kept smelling very rich burning exhaust. That got me thinking about the AFM, so I decided to start with the filter and check out the parts at that end. :icon_idea

As soon as I took the "tube" off, I saw a large melted area and then I saw it, a melted hole the size of an old Silver Dollar! I decided to try to duct tape the hole and see what happens. As soon as the car started, I could tell I found the problem! It was idling like it was supposed to again! ::w00t::

A $700 fuel pump, right! :bigun2:

Now all I need to do is figure out what they did to screw up my tranny and I'll have it on the road again! :icon_bigg

You had a "melted hole the size of an old Silver Dollar" in the AFM or the air intake tubing?? Either way that's quite disturbing... Instead of going ghetto with the duct tape make sure you fix that Supra up right! :icon_bigg

It was in the large intake tube (the really big plastic piece), I have reinstalled the heat shield that my son (other then the one that was going to buy the car from me) that installed the engine, left out and why the melt down. :3d_frown:

The duct tape is just temporary while I work on the tranny. Once I get it running, I'll replace it.

Your son needs a honda or a nissan. Not a supra. Be glad the car has fallen back into your lap. He'll regret it when dear old dad fixes it up and smokes he and his buddies. I hope it's a stick.

i think the tube your referring to is often called "the accordion pipe",you can sometimes find them on eBay in the toyota supra MKIII section under parts. i'm sure even a member might have one to sell or lead you in the right direction.
i suffered a similar problem, only it was the bottom turbo pipe.had a nasty hole that kept causing it to crap out at boost over 10 psi

Interesting you should say that...last night when he found out about me fixing it, the first thing he said was, so what do you think is wrong with the tranny and how fast are you going to fix so I can get it from you?

I told him, "Since he hasn't shown any interest in it since it had the problem, heck with that crap!" and besides, he should have seen it when he "examined" the intake. And that's been over three months! He was very disappointed when I told him, "you are NOT getting it back". I can be a mean dad when I want to be...:naughty:

It's an auto, no smoking anything with that car, besides, if I want to smoke something, I'll use my ST1300! :evil2:

One time my intake hose just broke in half when I tried to pull it off. I used duct tape on it and it worked for months no problems. When I found a nice brand new hose for free I replaced it lol. Duct tape worked fine for me, I mean as long as it held the hose together it wasnt hurting anything.

Jesus man! Listen to yourself!

Would you want to buy a car from an owner with that attitude?

Now I know why there are so many shitty supras out there.

Lol its a non moving part. The duct tape was air tight, it didnt suck any air before the filter. There was no way the intake hose would split again with the duct tape holding it. Just because its not JDM tyte doesnt mean it wont work. Its not like duct taping a drive shaft, its an air hose.

When you got no money and need to drive a car you do what works.

Sabre. It's not that you are being mean. You're teaching your son to respect the things he has so they will last him a lifetime. I'm a firm believer in that type of thing.

One of my kids wants a new caar and I'm thinking of getting her a nissan sentra ser spec v. But you can bet your bottom dollar that it had better be taken care of to my standards or she'll be riding a moped in college. Now that's mean. lol.

^^^ What he said. I got a 240SX for my daughter and it makes me want to cry when I see the way she treats it. Unwashed for months, God knows when the last oil change was done, spun it into a curb which ended her up a $700 repair bill she tried to keep from me. But hell, it's the last one from us. It amazes me every time she asks if she can drive my Supra... :nono:

I would've KILLED for something like that 240 when I was 18. Lucky me, I got to drive a 1977 Dodge Aspen wagon with simulated wood grain paneling, completely rusted out floorboards which made it stink, and rotted away rear quarter panels that left insulation hanging out on both sides. They just don't know when they've got it good.

You got that right! I have five sons. Dereck (#4 and the one that owned the Supra before I rescued it from him) did not treat it well, nor did he treat the one before that well. He is now driving a 92 Toyota Paseo around. And I keep telling him to learn how to work on it. It's about to loose its right CV joint. Do you think he'll fix it? Not yet....turkey! :nono:

I now have a 17 year old (he's graduating TOMORROW, Our last we are done with school! :naughty: And I gave him a 96 TBird to drive to school. He spin it out and hit a curb. Now the rear tire is at an odd angle. I told him I'm not fixing it, he'll have to. :evil2:

And BTW, I had an old 55 Chevy Station wagon that i had to drive...until a drunk hit it. Then I had a 62 Buick La Sabre.

Well, welcome to the site Mr. Sabre. It's good to know that other people's kids abuse their cars, too, not to mention the fact that it makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only "mean" dad out there. ;)
