I haven't posted much here, but I'm still dealing with trying to get my 89 Supra on the road. Back in March my son (was buying it from me) drove the car down to San Diego. When he got off the freeway, the car wouldn't idle. If you kept the revs about 1300, you could keep it from dieing on you. I drove down with my wife and drove the car home while my son went with his girlfriend.
After getting it home I told my son to start looking at the air intake system. Which obviously he didn't! :3d_frown: Instead, he told me everything looked fine and said he couldn't find anything wrong and needed to take to to the local independent Toyota shop.
He called me after picking it up from them that they said it was a bad fuel pump and filter and that it would be $700! :aigo: I told him no way was I going to pay $700 for a fuel pump, so to drive it home. He calls me a little later and now the car will not shift out of 1st. I was so pissed at the shop that I told him just call AAA and have the car dropped off at home.
So my son decided that he didn't want the car and that its back in my lap. My problem is that I haven't had anytime to even look at it... that was until last night. I wanted to start it up to get the fluids moving in it, and while I had it running around 1500 rpm, I kept smelling very rich burning exhaust. That got me thinking about the AFM, so I decided to start with the filter and check out the parts at that end. :icon_idea
As soon as I took the "tube" off, I saw a large melted area and then I saw it, a melted hole the size of an old Silver Dollar! I decided to try to duct tape the hole and see what happens. As soon as the car started, I could tell I found the problem! It was idling like it was supposed to again! ::w00t::
A $700 fuel pump, right! :bigun2:
Now all I need to do is figure out what they did to screw up my tranny and I'll have it on the road again! :icon_bigg
