Strange misfire/stall problem

I've searched the forums and I am having a difficult time finding any posts that match my problem. I am also getting no codes.

I bought my 87 turbo in February and everything was fine, except the previous owner had failed to fully reassemble the turbo compressor intake piping after shimming the wastegate. I fixed this and drove the car around, completely satisfied. I am not losing coolant and also not losing any oil (and the oil is staying a nice amber color). The motor typically runs just fine with acceptable power.

A few weeks ago, the car started stalling occasionally under light load, idle, coming to stops, etc. It doesn't do it very often so it is very difficult to replicate and I've only had this happen when the car is warm (but that could be pure coincidence, since it happens so rarely). There is no indication that the car is about to stall, either. It simply feels like a cylinder has a misfire or something and the motor dies instantly, if it is under light or no throttle.
If the car is under medium or full throttle, I will rarely feel a misfire, but the motor will manage to continue revving and then run as though nothing happened.

Now for the weird part:

Sometimes, when the motor stalls completely, I will try to crank it and start it again, and it will simply not turn over, as though the motor is seized or something. I can hear the starter motor burning out trying to turn the flywheel with no success. I can leave the motor for a couple of hours or so, come back and have it start right up like nothing is wrong. Sometimes I can even get the motor to start up just minuites after it fails to rotate.

I thought I might have some type of electrical problem until the motor started acting like it was mechanically seized every now and then (but usually running fine). I am having a hard time diagnosing my problem and I could use and would greatly appreciate any help I could get.

Pull your starter and rebuild it, check the gear teeth on the pinion, idler and clutch. If the stall condition persists, start looking at electrical. If this was mechanical (ie motor) I doubt it would restart like that.

Big sound system?

Actually, I have no soundsystem right now. I have a headunit that doesn't even power on and I have no intention of policing its wiring. I might actually sell it to help pay for repairs.

I am going to put a fresh starter on the car and see what changes, but I don't think it will really fix my problem because I can still hear/feel the starter engage the flywheel and try to crank without success.

Is it realistic to think an injector can be leaky enough to cause fuel hydrolock or does that sound totally unreasonable?

Problem fixed it seems.

My cam position sensor had a very loose crimping on a connector to the main harness. I cleaned up the connectors for all the CPS wires to the harness and the car seems to start quicker and I have not noticed any misfires.

I could probably have deducted this from a bit more forum searching, but I am new to diagnosing car problems and my time is very limited with school and work so I barely even get time to fiddle with the vehicle. Hopefully this gte treats me nicely in the coming years as I play around with it.:stickpoke

:x:

This is a really great forum I am stoked about its existence.
