I've searched the forums and I am having a difficult time finding any posts that match my problem. I am also getting no codes.
I bought my 87 turbo in February and everything was fine, except the previous owner had failed to fully reassemble the turbo compressor intake piping after shimming the wastegate. I fixed this and drove the car around, completely satisfied. I am not losing coolant and also not losing any oil (and the oil is staying a nice amber color). The motor typically runs just fine with acceptable power.
A few weeks ago, the car started stalling occasionally under light load, idle, coming to stops, etc. It doesn't do it very often so it is very difficult to replicate and I've only had this happen when the car is warm (but that could be pure coincidence, since it happens so rarely). There is no indication that the car is about to stall, either. It simply feels like a cylinder has a misfire or something and the motor dies instantly, if it is under light or no throttle.
If the car is under medium or full throttle, I will rarely feel a misfire, but the motor will manage to continue revving and then run as though nothing happened.
Now for the weird part:
Sometimes, when the motor stalls completely, I will try to crank it and start it again, and it will simply not turn over, as though the motor is seized or something. I can hear the starter motor burning out trying to turn the flywheel with no success. I can leave the motor for a couple of hours or so, come back and have it start right up like nothing is wrong. Sometimes I can even get the motor to start up just minuites after it fails to rotate.
I thought I might have some type of electrical problem until the motor started acting like it was mechanically seized every now and then (but usually running fine). I am having a hard time diagnosing my problem and I could use and would greatly appreciate any help I could get.
