So I was driving home today and out of nowhere my engine just keeps reving but I don't go any faster. Thought " ok, mabey when I shifted it slipped into neutral." Double check and tranny was in gear. It did this all the way home. Thae only way I could stop it somewhat was to, A. Double clutch on every shift. B. Let off the gas completly and then re-apply the gas. Pulled into the drive way and noticed an acrid type smell, like when breaks get really hot. Checked the brakes and they were fine. Just as I bring the car to a stop a huge plume of white smoke billows out from under the car. Can you guess what I get to do this weekend?!?!? New clutch FTMFL!!! Not gonna be fun, but I have a new in the box clutch on my basement floor. Just thought I would share my WTF is wrong drive home. I'm just glad it was the clutch and not the tranny. I adjusted the clutch pedal freeplay and it seemed to help a little. I hope it will last this week until I can fix it.

Smoking the clutch like that you better be ready to resurface or replace the flywheel. Should be done anyway with a new clutch.

Yeah, I will inspect it once I get every thing apart. If it is warped/cracked then I finally have an excuse to buy a Fidenza(SP?) wheel. Wich means the car will be down for at least a week waiting for a wheel. Damn, this sucks.

At least your car drives... :(

What clutch do you have now, and what clutch are you installing?

The clutch that shit the bed was in it when I bought it, so I would assume stock. I have a stock N/A clutch waiting to be called on.

Mine up and went out on me last weekend, although it wasn't slipping as bad and didn't self destruct. Dropped the transmission today, just need to order a new flywheel and put everything back in. You need to replace the flywheel or resurface it if you are replacing the clutch. Don't forget to order new flywheel bolts from Toyota.

Yeah, it was wierd. All of the sudden there was no freeplay in the pedal. It was like the clutch was not engaged or disengaded.(Collapsed pressure plate?) Could the clutch just overheat? I wans't driving like a bat out of hell or any thig, just driving normal.

Will Toyota bolts fit an aftermarket flywheel?

i bet something else happened.. we will see when you pull it appart..

I had a clutch on my BMW that was brand new.. some of the fingers failed.. so the pressure plate wouldent push down hard enough on the flywheel.. brand new clutch... fuck that sucked.

Master and slave cylinders were fine. This is starting to get really weird. I just went to get some smokes and the car was pretty jerky after I shifted. I parked the car and when I came back and drove it home it shifted just fine. The only things wrong are the pedal feel is really light and I can still smell that bag of burnt asses smell. I hope my car just has a sense of humor and decided to pull an April fools joke to get me all worked up. Will a lighter flywheel mess up daily driveabilty? The flywheel would be going on a near stock N/A.(I figure I might aswell get it now before I go 1/2 Na-T.)

Go to Advance Auto Parts (if you have one around) - they can get the Fidanza flywheel, and it will usually be there overnight.

That said, CK's right - usually, when your clutch is starting to go, you notice it. You usually feel that slippage when you accelerate, but it'll still hold steady state cruise. I've found that I generally have 2-4 weeks of easy driving left in the clutch, after the first time I notice it slipping on a WOT run. I also know to be easy on her from there ;)

I suggest pulling the 7m and the tranny together, not sure if your a turbo but the r154 is not a fun job to remove/install alone. If you are just going to pull the tranny I'll give you some tips to make it go smoother.
