Signs of a bad power steering pump?

I just recently had my rack replaced with a newer one from an 88'. Once we put the new rack on, the rack would make pinging and dinging noises while driving. We took out the dampener and the problem was solved (is there anything wrong with running without one)? But they were also saying that it could be my pump, because it has been run dry a few more times then once back when I was leaking. Now it seems okay, but what are the signs that it is going out?

I want to know about the steering dampener also. A guy at toyota said it was fine to take out... but I am still not sure of what to do.

They were in pre 89's I think. It just looks like a shock.

Yes, it looks almost exactly like a shock. The reason why I believe my rack when pinging was because whenever I would turn then go back straight, the dampener would get stuck, causing a loud ping whenever it would release. Makes sense since the sound went away after I took it out.

I'm goign to take mine out also. No point of it being there if mine is shot. Toyota wants $200 for a new one. I think it should be fine with out it.

On a serious note they usually start making noise when idling or revving with the wheels straight.
