Yeah, a loose crank bolt will make a knocking sound...kinda slight at 1st, but when the keyway is FUBAR'ed, it gets pretty bad.

Might want to check behind those cam gears to be sure nothing (like the outside bolts) is hitting the back plate or one of the bolts securing the back plate to the head is hitting the gears (had this happen with my AEM's...tap, tap, tap)

^ Ditto

Had to shorten the bolts by 3mm.
(mine wouldn't turn at all though scared the crap out of me I thought the Valves were hitting the pistons when I changed to a 2mm MHG)

define loose, like able to turn by hand? I mean the crank bolt takes 200ft-lbs of torque so loose is all relative

LOL..same here!

Put the car in gear, emergency brake on and try to tighten the crank bolt with a 19mm socket...it it turns clockwise (at all) it's loose.

i'd do it right now but i don't have a 19mm....i have a gap from 16mm to 21mm :(

i was racing another mkiii one night. we hit it on the highway ,and as i pulled away, a vicious rod-knock came blasting in through the pass window. so i lifted in panic, but the knock drove away from me. we pull over. no oil on the dipstick

it happens all the time

LMAO sucks to be you today!! :)

I RK'd my old GE on the return leg of an 1800 Km trip :(

It had burned a bit of Oil on the trip up, I forgot to check it when I was leaving.

There was an accident on the highway ahead I had to get on the brakes hard and swerved to avoid debris then accelerated away........knock knock knock DOH.

LOL Doh is right. At least the accident was avoided

I just find this situation so odd that it took so damn long to come about...i mean 2 months? and no signs until this past week right after i mess with the timing a bit? I mean i took this car out snow drifting a couple times after the low oil incident and never had any issues (yes, i kept my eye on oil pressure ALL the time during which, i was paranoid, i even added an extra court of oil before i left to do it haha)

I just used the 21mm. I figured i wouldn't be applying much torque cause all i have is a standard sized rachet. My e-brake sucks so even in fifth gear the car simply moved forward as i gave it some force....didn't seem to budge. Ill get a torque wrench on it asap and same with the cam gears

You can monitor frequency outputs via SAFCII...i always keep an eye on it

Unfortunately i cant make it to the shop. Its 350 miles away...i have to do this on my own time :nono:

I will attempt the listening method most likely tomorrow, im losing light quick now. Its coming from the front of the engine, cylander 1 and 2. The mechanic said that's no surprise since they are the last to get oil apparently. Valve tap is almost non existant as the head was rebuilt with the engine :icon_bigg

I'm currently using Federal bearings....ever heard of them? The guy who races 7m's i guess uses them and changes them yearly.

you can monitor 4 channels. i do thrtl, RPM, fuel adjust. and knock readings but you can select whatever you want...its notdifficult to figure out

Dude, I have a Neo and there is no knock option in the monitor screen.

I do tps, Kpa, correction and rpms using the peak and hold feature.

I don't know what to tell you. Either you don't know how to navigate the menus properly or yours just doesn't have that option

OK, you're gonna hate me, cause I'm getting deja vu here, but I remeber setting my timing and getting "rod knock"

It wasn't rod knock but the damn idler pulley for the timing belt, since you don't have the top cover on, it's gonna be even louder.

It's worth pulling to find out...

I will look. Keep in mind i didn't change cam settings, only via CPS, but anything to avoid tearing up the engine ill try.

Also i have vids posted on page one....you can hear how loud it is/isn't compared to what you heard.

Also, the knock varies, louder and softer as i adjust teh timing. It actually become intermitten as the engine warms up.

Maybe you have spat out a shim??

didn't know you could really do that, doesn't explain why the noise would vary in loudness by adjusting the timing though. its something to keep in mind though.

I just got in contact with an aquaintence who happens to be toyota master mechanic...he has his own garage at his house and is going to cut me a good deal on some of the work ill be having done....so that's atleast SOME good news :icon_bigg

its NOT rod knock!!!! wooooooooooot

however now ther is a new problem.

Intake cam gear. Aftermarket OBX. Bolt must have loosened over the couple months, not much at all though as it was still on quite tight. However it slowly ate away a bit of the gear, (cam appears ok). The gear i notice as it rotates shifts very slightly up and down while the exhaust one only moving radially.

The first i noticed the gear was loose i touch it. I was able to move backwards and forwards by pushing the top of the gear towards the firewall.

Question is....now what? anyway to fix this or do i just need a new gear?
