Hello all,
So that time has come for me to repaint my Supra. I don't that much about painting. so....here are my questions..
My paint code is: 8J3 Blue Metallic
I guess i'm budgeting approx. 3k for the paint job.
After toying with many different colors in my head I've decided that I may want to stick with the stock color but I sure would like to add some life to it with some depth and sheene.
I believe such paints have Pearl in them. So pearl is a must.
The MKII Supras had a very nice paint called: Medium Pearl Red. Such a beautiful sheen from that paint. So I was thinking maybe, Medium Pearl Blue.
Here's what I'd like to achieve once my car is repainted...
Firstly, I'd like to achieve at least the same level/quality of a completed paint job as the factory or better. Meaning, very little orange peel.
Would like to pull the motor out and have the engine bay sprayed as well....and while the motor's out paint the block, change out the clutch & flywheel, add a new oil pump, get to any other hoses that needs to be replaced and fix anything.
I would like all the door, trunk, fuel jams be painted as well.
Would like about 4-6 coats of clear.
Would like to replace the rear hatch mouldings while i'm at it also.
I'd like to keep all the factory decals that's been applied to the car. I like factory looking stock finish. Like those on the inside of the hood, the door jams etc.
Below the body mouling the paint has a "orange peeled" texture to it and I think it is that way because of being exposed to the elements, etc.?? Anyone ever noticed this??
I believe the paint shop should have a 'down draft' type booth to catch any over-sprays etc. And I guess the rest is up to the painter and his craft.
No runs or signs of over-spraying. Would like to have the parts pulled before painting.
Here are my questions:
Primer: Any special primers recommended are some better than others? Any Must have?
Paints: What brand is a good brand, I don't have to have the most expensive brand name, but quality is what i'm going for.
Clears: Again, what brand is a must have?
I've read where some people have put pearl in the clear, some put pearl in the paint etc. etc. What's the difference??
And what talking with a paint shop what types of questions I should ask so that I at least sound like I know what i'm talking about. hehe
And:
And for those of you who have successfully repainted your Supra, what were the problems enountered AFTER you began the process?? What to look out for?
THANKS!
