reliable exhaust welds

hey all, ive got a small arc welder and was wondering if i could make any sort of a working exhaust. whats the main type of weld used for fabricating exhausts, and anyone have hints/tips?

yeah its all mig... but if you can use the arc, i would say go for it, the welds will be ugly but who cares if you just want funtionality

arrighty, so looks like general consensus is: stick welding is gonna be ugly, but as long as everything fits well and i get a good weld, it'll be useable.

screw flux core in a mig. Use shielding gas, the weld will turn out so much nicer.


I built my entire exhaust myself out of a 3.5" stick of pipe. Where I needed bends I cut 22.5 degree angles X as many needed to make a somewhat smooth bend . I then welded it all together under the car.

pie cuttgin is pain in the ass but some times you got to work wiht what you got

but as for stick and for a good weld is clean your works as you go on this will resalt in good weld and genrale idea how to weld like smal c's and such

like most have said, if stick welding is properly done, it should look like any other weld, plus it is easier and cheaper to weld with more exotic materials. If just welding carbon or low alloy, mig will work perfectly.

and a hint for migging, go easy on the current...practice first to avoid burning holes in the piping.
