Well I had a turbo diff sitting in my garage for a while, I installed it in my car and drove it aorund for a few months with no noise. A few days ago I decided to do a diff flush and when I removed the drain plug only a few drips came out and that was it. I used the royal purple75w90 limited slip gearlube. I'm not to sure why it would be humming. And it seems to be worse at about 30 untill like 50sih. Its a smooth ride and not bumpy at all. I know the right side seal in the diff is leaking but I don't think that would have anythinng to do with it. Do I maybe need to use a thicker lube or what? Thankyou

there are bearings that are on the differential, those could be bad, or it may be a wheel bearing. it also depends how long youve been driving with no fluid, the gears themselves often times can make noise if worn out or not installed properly.

Honestly I would say the leak on one side has everything to do with it having issues as this is why it didn't have any fluids inside it when you attempted to drain it. This lead to the diff itself being damaged. I seriously doubt any kind of quick fix is available to you at this point through "thicker" or any other type of varied lubrications.

The damage is done so your options are, A. Can I live with the whines and or grumbles. Or B. rebuild it properly through a locally respected shop near you.

Unfortunately your hand may be forced to B depending upon the seriousness of the damage and it's affect on the diff.

Keep one thing in mind though. When a diff goes it can be BAD, real bad. Like suddenly send you sideways in an unplanned right or left turn into something solid or off of something depending on where you may be at that particular un-choose-able moment in time. Or it may just go.......ker-snap and suddenly all forward momentum is gone.

Your diff IMO, can be seen as a life-supporting mission critical part of your car with no less of importance then your brakes or suspension arm. Something in other words you don't want surprising you with the ker-snap as it were,

Just my thoughts on this. A diff going bad isn't something that should be ignored until your forced to deal with it.

+1^. Sorry to hear about the diff. but I may be able to help you out in one way. A friend of mine is getting ready to put an N/A diff. in his '87 turbo and he will then have a spare turbo diff. sittin' on the shelf doin' nothing. I could ask on your behalf if it might be for sale. He has sold me quite a few parts off his old DD to help me get mine running and he will be reasonable on the price for sure. Lemme know.
