Questions about the TEMS system...

I've seen the TEMS on my struts in the engine bay and compared them to the TEMS system on newer vehicles and there's definitely a size difference. My questions are:

1: Are they the same electronically? (faster response maybe?)
2: What are the differences, if any, apart from size?
3: Is there anything special required to use the newer TEMS on an '88?
4: Does it really matter to swap them out in the first place? (like to keep the TEMS awhile longer...)

One advantage I see is with an additional strut bar, it's GOTTA be easier to install that with the newer system.

Yes, 90 and up TEMS actuators are smaller and faster in response. No rewiring is necessary, they are plug and play.

indeed! buddy and myself did a bench test and you can see and hear the difference in reaction time. noticable difference on the road.:naughty:

I have a set of rear actuators I'm getting ready to take off they are off my 90 and functional. Unfortunately I don't have the fronts because when I bought the car it didn't have the front two.

I used I have tems on my 86.5, previous owner took it out. Dunno if it was the right choice though cause I've never driven with tems before.

alot of people do this i think mainly cause they want a more "fit your needs" set-up. but with the better actuaters i actually enjoy the tems set-up. think most people just dont understand them so they get a pre educated assumption bout them and toss them for a more "bragging rights" set up :)

hks needs to bring back the tems controller and it will be sweeeeeet. :evil2:

Yeah, no shit. I'd love to get my hands on one of these, but they're so damned rare and I just can't afford it. I did come across a totaled car with one once, they guy was selling the entire car, which had a lot of rare parts, for $1k, but it sold before I could get to it. Damned shame.

No kidding. I'd love to get ahold of one of those as well.

Well, I should be receiving my replacement TEMS soon, so I'll be sure to post up how it feels. I'm also looking at spacers for when I get front and rear strut bars, but the bars themselves are a little pricey for me right now...

the other thing you can do too if the tems is still not doing what you hoped for, take off the actuaters, and adjust them manually. i have done this once, little too stiff at times on the 3rd setting, lol. but VERY cool for cornering :evil2:

another thing to help make the stock tems set up a little bit better is to get better sway bars. friend of mine has done this and man its a nice set up. but he does have the hks tems controller. BRING IT BACK HKS!!!!!!!

bring it back, bring it back, BRING IT BACK !!!!!!!!!! :rant2:

Question: Does anyone have a pic of the TEMS computer as to where it's located? I've heard it's either behind the passenger side seat in the cargo area or up front in the passenger side kicker panel below the ECU. I've got my HKS TEMS controller and am gearing up to install it, but not sure what to take apart first.

Ohh, and the newer actuators are the bomb. Fast reaction times and definitely improves the handling. When I get strut bars front and rear, it'll really feel good!

As far as I know, it's in the boot of the cargo area, passanger side. Photos attached, just keep in mind I RHD as I'm from down under, but it will still be on your passanger side. TSRM says this is the only place it is...

For those that don't want to wait around for a HKS controller, jumping E1 and Ts in the daignostic block will cause the TEMS to go hard if you have it on the sport setting in the cabin.

E1 is the ground for the diagnostics block. So simply splicing Ts at the TEMS computer, putting a switch in and grounding it, you can override the ECU and have TEMS on firm for the entire time when switched on.

I've had this set up for about 2 months now... it's great! Nice soft ride for normal driving, get into the twisties and flick it to hard. I have complete control of the TEMS system and I didn't have to get a rare as part (but I don't have the bling...)

I spliced Ts at the passangers side door, as its the only purple wire there. I then ran the wire to a switch on the dash and then grounded it. Took 20 minutes to do, simple as anything!!

Tokico Illumina II's are the only aftermarket ones I think. If you do decide to keep the TEMS and get Tokico's, think about redoing your springs with Eibachs or H&R's. This should really improve your suspension in a big way.
