Okay there's cliff notes at the end of this for people that browse through these.

First off: 88 7mgte 5-speed, just got done rebuilding it ( lived by the supra bible and took it to a machine shop, MHG, ARP head studs and all those other goodies :) ). When I got the car 7weeks ago, head was already off, the guy I got it from said to just put the PAPER head gasket back on it and call it good. Salami that!!! I yanked it out and went through the whole motor. All bearings, machined the head, block, crank, and got the rods checked out. Note: the machine shop I took it to works a lot on EVO's, 2J Supras and whatnot. Put it all back together and got the motor back in the car, torque the head to 80ft-lbs with the moly grease ARP sends with their head studs. I'm at the end of it all and threw the battery in and spun it over.

Nothing.

So heres a few questions.

1. Where does the main grounding wire from the battery hook to the motor?

2. What is that third line that comes off the fuel rail, and goed to the manifold? Why does it have a friggin' high pressure? And Why cant I fix it with a rubber hose?? Note: Last owner put the rubber hose on it.

3. Would the bad ground I pick on the motor beside the AC bracket cause my exterior lights not to work? Note: pull back on the turn signal and the lights pop up and come on, turn signals work. With the motor out, I hooked up to a battery to roll the window down and the lights did work.

4. When spinning the motor, ( again lived by the supra bible and it is in time, and so is the CPS ) doesn't sound like it's hitting at all. Gonna run a compression test, timing light, and use a can of Starting fluid :evil5: tomarrow (Sun.) When I get off.

5. Why does the Fuel Pump relay act like its on crack everytime I hook up the battery? I hook it up to power and it 'hums' on and keeps going. It doesn't turn off, I didn't let it sit and run, but I look at the third line off the fuel rail, No leak. Hop in the car and try cranking it, nothing, hop out of the car and check the third line off the fuel rail and it's bubling and leaking. Like under high pressure. And the fuel pump relay keeps going!!

6. Common things people forget to hook up after pulling the engine, rebuilding it, and putting it back in... I don't care how stupid it may sound, I want to double check myself.

That's about it, I'll keep on the Holy Search bar trying to find answers and keep searching the Supra Bible for answers but I'm kinda stumped. Any and all help is appreciated.

Cliff notes:

1. Where's the negative cable hook to the motor?

2. Does the fuel pump relay ever stop humming?

3. What's the third line off of the fuel rail? ( between the fuel rail and the intake manifold.)

4. Common things people forget to hook up after an engine pull.

1: yeah, by the compressor.
2: most guys like hummers.:biglaugh:
3: cold start injector.
4: grounds. :evil2:

- Coilpack plug & ground
- ECU grounds to the back and bottom of the intake manifold
- AFM - although it'll start without that plugged in
- O2 sensor(s)
- Coolant lines to the throttle body. These are a SUPER PITA to get hooked up without taking the intake manifold back off again.
- Electric fan plugs next to the battery
- Starter plug

-Starter is spinning the motor, so that's good.
-Electric fan/radiator not in yet, want to get the motor to hit first.
-ECU and Coilpack grounds?? I'll look for these tomarrow.
-the turbo o2 (big ol' yellow plug) is hooked up.

Looks like I got 'ground' problem. Thanks for the help guys!!!

hey not to hijack but what color are those ecu ground wires that go to the UIM? im finishing up a build myself and have 2 wires near the starter and vss plug that i cant figure out. they both look like grounds but i can find only one spot to put one. i have the 91 service manual but actually own an 87and dont know if the color coding is the same. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

lmfao... (only funny cause i've been there) might want to think about replacing the ECU now.(i have one if you want. <89 yellow plug, GTE 5spd)

as for where they go, there is a... "tab" underneath the IM that a bolt will go into.. bolt them down there.. it is just above the starter IIRC, right of the hard vacuum lines. (right if you're facing the IM from the drivers side)

forgotten things:

Vaccum lines... there are tons of them
coolant lines.. ISC, TB and there's a stinker around the EM IIRC
Grounds.. ECU(covered) coilpack grounds
VSVs and knock sensor.
and the little metal dowel that holds your cams in position (long story short that 5$ piece of $#!T kept my car from starting for a whole year)

g'luck man getting an engine to run after a tear down is always fun.

Ma70... I almost had that problem, from the guy I got it from, I only got 1 pin for the cams. So I cut up an allen wrench that was a really tight fit and it works perfect.

Update!!!!

-The grounding wires for the ecu are on the Intake Manifold now and are gounded.

-The main ground is wired to the block

-The coil packs are grounded with a thicker wire now (didn't have any wire before) and grounded to the Alt. bracket.

-Still gotta find a fix for the 'third' hose off the fuel rail.

-She puttered when I tried to crank her, got my dad to spin her over while I sprayed Starting fluid into the intake (not the turbo, just the pipe over the valve covers.) and it ran for a little bit, like 2seconds.

Actions now: DRAIN THE TANK!! Ah gawd.... hope I can find enough juggs, I don't think I can give away 2year old, dead gas. Unless somebody wants it??

Thanks for all the held and whatnot, the ECU didn't fry!! So that's good, and hope to have it purring tomarrow.

I got one for the forgotten BEFORE removing engine category.

Taking the pressure out of the full lines before removing the banjo bolt. I don't know how many time I sprayed gasoline everywhere not doing that step.

One question still remains.... That line off of the fuel rail to the cold start injector. What's a good way to repair it? Right now I got a bolt stopping it up just to build up the fuel pressure.

cliff notes:

How to repair the cold start injector line???

For anybody still reading this.

Found out one big problem with it cranking up.

There was a shop rag caught up in the Throttlebody butterfly. Yes I know, I stuffed a red shop rag into the 3000 pipe ( car sits outside ) so nothing could get in, and I guess I forgot to pull it out. Heh...

It did fire up, but the fuel leak is so bad, it wont hold any fuel pressure and run on all four... ah crap six.... my bad. It wont run on all 6 cylinders.

Thanks for all the help again!!

and watch out for those pesky shoprags:sarcasm:

Yeah I know.... but it's raining today and the fuel line has to be ordered from Japan ( through toyota). Yep, the fuel line has to be searched for in the US and if they cant find it, they have to get it from Japan.

This could take a while. Fudgemuffins... :3d_frown:
