Hey guys...before you flame me, yeah I've searched! lol :icon_bigg

now you can't really blame me for my train of thought here if you have had more than a few years of experience dealing with 7M's....:nono:

I was wondering how many of you tore your 1J's down before putting them in your car.

I was pondering the idea of picking up a gasket kit and changing out all the oil seals and maybe doing a new headgasket, but since it's metal, I'm not sure if I should even worry about it or not....I'm not going for 900 HP or anything...

I've got a fresh set of rebuilt twins that I'm gonna slap on there, but other than that, did most of you guys just transplant it over and wire it in?

I'm not too sure what I need to do before putting it in the car...I don't know if I'm being intelligent or overly paranoid....I probably don't need to touch anything involving the headgasket, but it's been in the back of my head...(remember that 7m thing..lol...hard to break old ways...j/k)

any input would be appreciated.

~Thanks.

get a gasket kit.

wont ever have worry about your main seals leaking. pulling the engine to fix the rear main after 10k miles or something would suck.

if you just want the HG for whatever reason, I have a brand new one for sale :O

since the motor already comes with a metal headgasket, I'm under the assumption that there is not a major amount of prep work needed to install a headgasket. (certainly not as much as doing the mhg on the 7M). I'm figuring if I get a gasket kit, I might as well do the headgasket as well....along with valvestem seals, etc etc etc.

How many people have changed out the headgaskets on thier 1J's? Most of my car knowledge has been from the 7M, so I always fear the worst when it comes to doing jobs like that...lol....

but point is...correct me if I'm wrong, but since it's seals from the factory with a metal head gasket, then there shouldn't be much prepwork, if any, when it comes to changing out the gasket, correct?

I bought a set of twins off a guy that had them on a 1.5 JZ and he upgraded to a full 2JZ and he had a set of twins he was selling that were just rebuilt and they only had about 150 miles on them. He provided documentation showing that they were rebuilt. They were very clean, had no shaftplay to speak of and spun very freely....I'm normally really sceptical about those type of things...especially buying used turbos, but it was a great deal that I couldn't pass up.... so even if the turbos are fine on the the clip, I'm still gonna change them out for piece of mind.

back on the conversation of the HG install... You said the same prepwork as any engine, well I shouldn't have to take the block out to do anything, just clear the surface of any extraneous materials and the same with the head, check for warpage, put on ARP head studs, install gasket after spraying down with copper gasket sealer, put head back on, torque down the head....etc etc etc...

I know I'm forgetting something...lol...that's just a generalization...

but I think I've answered my own question...I wasn't sure if I was going to even worry with the head gasket, but I might as well, since I'm getting a gasket kit.
