Will the ability to modify cars be limited in the future if most switch to some form of electrical power?

Wouldn't a mainly electric car negate the possibility of tuning anything having to do with air and fuel, such as intake air temperatures, timing, air/fuel ratio and so on?

Just keeping this basic right now, I hope to see the thread branch out into different thoughts on different systems.

who knows how modifying will work in the future.
it'll prolly be like put this new high voltage batttery and gain 100 hp.

watch future cars on channel 31 or 30 i forgot, they will be showing electric powered cars sooner or later.

Well I forsee the following...

Dealer: "Hello sir, welcome to Toyota! Can I help you with those measurements?"
Me: "Sure, just hold your end over on that side of the engine bay."
Me: "Just like that, excellent!"
Me: "Now the other way, good good."
Me: "Perfect I will take one with all the gadgetry and none of that heavy shit"

-----Two days later-------
Mechanic: "You want me to tear this "electrical shit" out of your brand new car?"
Me: "Yes, I'm doing a 1J swap."

The only thing that I can think of for a modification with an electric car would be to have backup batteries used only in times where you want the extra power. Have the car run full time on its normal batteries then take the extra juice to blast you up to speed right when you need it most.

Sort of like a nitrous type deal... as far as actually doing real mods to the car will probably rely on the driveline modification (gearing). Not to mention the motor itself, I am sure there is something that could be done to increase the strength of it.

It is going to be the same thing that happened in 1987 when the last carburated engines were pumped out from the dealer.

the old school carb heads didnt have the small blocks w/ carbs anymore and people starting messing with this weird EFI stuff. At first it was limited to the few who knew how to use a computer and to the technology, by the time laptops became common place the rich started to pay the dimes needed to modify their new EFI cars. As the EFi cars got older they became more accessible and the whole realm of adjusting a/f ratios started.

SAME thing is going to happen with the new hybrid cars. A new generation of cars is going to emerge and make our EFI internal combustion engines relics and collectibles much like your grandpas Chevelle SS he picked up for $1k

Our kids will have access to these older used hybrid cars and start messing with watt's and volts instead of injectors and octane ratings. The question is how many people are going to be killing themselves as they switch to transformors and high output batteries.

im in, instant hp!

Anyone know what happened to Mitsubishi's Eclipse hybrid concpet???

I remember it was 400hp all wheel drive and got 50 mpg. IIRC they had a few that were real working cars, but i never saw anything after the dateline special or whatever i saw it on.

It was a turbocharged v6 with a larger than normal hybrid battery. <<At least i'm pretty sure.

Ya, I found a bunch of other people talking about it. But no one had any real info less than 3 years old. I guess the idea never really went anywhere. they made a couple of em and they did 0-60 in 5, but they obviously never went into production.

Oh well, I'll look for the Yota now. :biglaugh:

:)

i suppose people will find ways to modify and tune most anything that comes out, like the example of the carbs to efi.
