Porsche 944 is the front engine porsche I was thinking about, quite a few around here, even modded their slower than my car...and about as reliable...
shove it in a 2nd gen prelude....... ive always wanted to make a rwd one.... it would fit perfect too, just a lot of fab work... tunnel, mounts ect. But DAMN it would be sick.

think about it this way, with stockish power in a VW bug (read 1800-2200 lbs) it would put it in the 12s or 13s. granted you would need to hack the back a little bit to fit, but it would be sick.
