Out of curiosity, is it possible to lap the block for a mhg to the right RA without tearing down the motor completely?

I don't know if it was the "right" ra, but I've lapped the deck by hand on a friend of mines car.

It took us a whole day and I wouldn't recommend it, but it's been at least a couple of years and his mhg is still holding with around 13 or 14lbs of boost.

Frankly, I'm kind of amazed it's lasted, since I wasn't sure it would even seal at the time.

Oh yeah, ARP head studs down real tight.

So it can be done.

yes, lapping to get it down to the right RA is done all the time...

doing it with the engine assembled is a bit of a bitch though, as any of the diamond paste in the oil would ruin your day...

you'll need a lapping plate, paste, ect... there is a thread somewhere on it...

hm, I was just curious if I would be able to... Hmm, the motor has 10,000km on it, block was decked and lapped but a non metal headgasket was used instead... I read that cometic gaskets are ok to use with the an ra of 50, wich is what the stock spec is for the block. I just think it would be a shame to tear down the motor completely since it's all new and in like new shape right now..

What's wrong with the composite you are running now? At this point a better use of time and money would be tuning - make sure you don't overly stress the composite gasket.

If you have a good seal now, I wouldn't just change the gasket unless you have other big plans. If you DO have big plans, you'll want to tear it down anyway.

well my plans fall right in between what the composite gaskets can handle and the need for forged internals.... My plan is to run a boss ss turbo, with supporting mods, and be in the range of 400-450. I was just curious if it was possible, if not I'll run it until the hg pops then tear it down for a mhg... of course I won't be trying to cause it to blow on purpose and will make it last as long as possible with a good tune.

I guess I'll test what the limits of an oem head gasket and arp bolts will take.
