I've got an eBay carbon fibre/chrome aluminum e-brake handle, but the chrome is peeling off in some spots so I figured I would just paint the metal parts. What's the best way to get the rest of the chrome off and get a good result painting the aluminum underneath? Sand it off? As for durability, I was thinking of using a liquid plastic enamel type paint. Any other options?

Somebody is..well they didn't know what they are dong. you CAN'T chrome aluminum. :3d_frown: You can polish it to LOOK like it but it will not stay (hence the reason why it is peeling off)

Bring it to a beed blaster (they have them at the anodizing shop)and then have it polished (by you) and then send it for hard anodizing. (it will not dent or scratch if you use hard anodizing) It will look sharp. :icon_bigg

Please explain how supranick had all his intake piping and valve covers chromed.

I would also like an explination to how they chrome aluminum wheels.

Eagerly awaiting your reply,
Chris.

You will notice that in my post, I said it can be but it will come off (well ti is not clear but it is there...my wording if kinda off.) I meant to say that it can be but it will peel off if someone doesn't know what they are doing.

> Ok doh doh..I also have "chrome " valve covers remember. ;) I should have made it more clear then. It is better off as being polished. The chrome has a big process and if not done correctly, it will make parts flake, chip or turn color. Ask me how I know.
Special anodes--which resemble pencil-thick wires and are intended to provide a positive charge near the to-be-plated surface--fit into small parts (wheels fr example) and other various parts to help evenly distribute the electroplating materials. When placed a chemical bath, the part/item to be chromed is subjected to high-voltage, low-current electricity to promote deposition of the plating material from sacrificial anode to the item, which is the cathode. If this is not done correctly, it will turn out nice in the beginning but in the end it will look like shit. (Get what i am saying?)..I have done many parts on my car both chrome and polished)
Always opt for a high-quality clear coat after the polishing, (if you decided to go this route),unless you really enjoy spending an hour polishing for every hour you drive or make the part dull. Just like the turbo on the car.
Wheels particularly must be carefully polished to seal the surface and provide a smooth face. If these are not smooth then the chrome will again flake chip etc...as I have experienced. Yes the aluminum CAN be chromed but I was referring to Tek as they shouldn't be in more of a lazy term (unless they know what they are doing so to speak.)

Mine are chipping as he also noticed on his part. If you want them to look chrome (which is what most people do with SS and Aluminum) it would be a better solution. :icon_bigg

I've seen chrome on aluminum that lasted really well. So, I think it's more a matter of how the process is accomplished.

Like everything else there's the right way and every other way.

I think your e-brake was done 1 of the every other ways. Toss it.

I come from a land down under
Just needs to be plated with a primer surface before the Chrome is applied.
(strikes me as a dumb thing to do anyway, wow I have this really nice light part I think I'll add a heavy shiny layer)

Another process used it vaccum metalising sort of looks like chrome but isn't, you see it used on plastics a lot.
