I brought this car home during the summer just to find out my Cooling system kept on pressurizing none stop and shooting coolant out of the reservoir. Did a compression check with no hope.New radiator cap and no hope. Changed my water pump and radiator and no hope. Changed ALL my hoses (Radiator top and bottom hose, Rear heater in and out hose, The small front and rear bypass hose, and ran new throttle body coolant hose too)

It did not help. Ran to all 3 nearest NADA to find a coolant test kit but none of them had it and would have to wait (Seeing that the nearest is a 30 minute drive was not worth waiting. Plus I wanted to change my gasket with a better one anyways) So I started pulling my head. Pulled my head hoping to see a blown section but did not see any rip in the stock gasket that was really noticeable.

Only thing different was cylinder 1 to 5 the piston was dark but cylinder 6 the outer side seems to be clean. Don't know why. I was wondering if all BHG motor MUST have visible blown section or can it be tiny? I notice the rear side is a bit wet. I know a bit of coolant might of have spilled on but I left the coolant draining a few days back in all the ports and hoses.

I also notice the valves on cylinder 6 is wet!!!

I do not know if this help but it could also be from me lifting my head that caused this but I know some of the coolant cut out section of the gasket has this center piece in it. Those pieces are push up and not flat.

Head cylinder 4,5 and 6... I notice the valves on 6 is wet. I doubt coolant can touch that when removing the head.

Without looking too hard, the ring around the number 3 cylinder is blown, and the one on number 6 is starting to. Plus what arvin said. Addionally, there looks to be a lot of corrosion in there too.

EDIT: beat me to it ^^

cylinder 3 and 6...

the metal part that actually seals around the cylinder is badly deformed outwards on both of them...

looks typical for a stock HG with the stock headbolt torque...

Nah, like they said it's bad in a few places. Fwiw it seems you went though a lot of needless diagnostics to get here. And I don't know how many times I've posted where combustion testers can be bought at half the price Napa sells them. Even ebay has them for cheap. Not to mention you can go to the pet store and buy something that'll do the same thing.

Man that sucks, BHG is one reason I've almost grown to hate hte MK3, at least in the powertrain department, too many failure points, I can't seem to understand how they never recalled the car for that, and they never changed the design in later models, I could see 86.5, 87, 88 maybe 89 even but 90 and so on shoulda been given a MHG, better oil sump and squirters and the car woulda been more fun.

Just bitching I guess, I'm bored u cant have any fun with a stock HG and I dont wanna dump the money into doing it so im stuck making a lil power and a lil torque but not really loving it. Meanwhile MK4 people can spend 2k and make 400+whp lol kinda sad it takes more than that to do a good HG job and rebuild, and then add bigger injectors and all the other needed pieces to the power puzzle.

Good Luck man!

Better oil sump and squirters? What on earth are you on about?

The worst thing to happen to MKIIIs is this generation of owners... by far.

I've said it in other posts as well, there's nothing lacking about the stock oiling system, except maybe for the bypass at 40 psi., but you don't have to worry about that until you're starting to put out big power.
