Ok, I searched here, the TSRM, and out there in the big wide world and I cant seem to find this info. While pulling my motor and trans I pulled the torque converter and for various reasons dumped most of the fluid out of it. Im now ready to reinstall the trans behind the motor but dont know how much fluid to put back in the converter.

My understanding of automatics is limited, but my logic tells me the converter gets fluid feed from the transmission, so I only need to put enough fluid in to make it spin initially so it turns the pump, but also enough that nothing is damaged on start up. If someone could tell me how much fluid I need to put into a nearly empty a340 converter that would be awesome.

It is messy if you haven't noticed. You are a long long way from the first person to dump it, so don't sweat it.

Seems like you just fill while it is flat, and then carefully put it back on, lifting the front forward. Some will spill again.

When you refill, it will take some time. Start it and run the shifter all the way to L1, pausing at each position, and recheck the level. The cold mark is only a general refrence, and the actual level must be put between the hot marks when hot.

so basically just put in as much as I can? I think I can manage that. Are we talking 1qt or more like 4? I cant even seem to find the capacity of the whole trans. All I see is the drain and refill amount of 1.7qts.

My guess is that the total volume of the trans minus the 1.7 will give me an approximate amount in the converter. ;)

Drain and fill does not include the converter, that is correct. The trans probably holds more than a gallon including the converter.

lol, no just didnt want to screw up the trans after all this work on the motor. Im actually going to run the trans for a few minutes then do another fluid change. I basically want to do a flush.

I got the converter filled and put on the input shaft at this point so its all good guys, thanks for the help.

I come from a land down under
LOL here's how I do it ;)

Just buy an extra couple of qt's to run through once you've changed the filter and Oil.

Dump old Oil and filter replace drop a couple of Qt's in and take one of the cooler lines off run motor for a few minutes with the hose in a bucket refit hose fill and bleed.
