First post on the new server woo!

So I have a pair of EDM (German) LHD folding mirrors, that began to suffer the all to familiar problem of deforming bases. I opted to take care of it early before it progressed much further. Unfortunately the popular replacement covers are only for RHD mirrors so I was out of luck for the easy repair option. First body shop I took it to had done good work for me in the past and felt that I was in good hands despite the expensive quote they gave me. To be fair I didn't care all long as they could indeed repair them, which of course they assured me they could. Fast forward two week and I receive a call informing me that they are impossible to repair and cannot be repaired period. So I went down to go pick up my mirrors and search for a different body shop, upon arriving I was greeted to the sight of this.

No rest assured they were not in this condition when I dropped them off. According to the shop owner, they had attempted to sand the paint off with a grinder :aigo: on plastic no less, err what was left of it anyways.

After contacting two different body shops none of them wanted to touch them, according to another, if they were repaired the wind would rip them apart :ugh2: because "fiberglass wont hold up to the wind".

Finally a local Supra owner and also body man stated he could repair them no problem. Unfortunately some of the damage incurred by the first body shop was going to prove difficult repairing back to 100%, but I was ok as long as it was close.

I was impressed to say the least, considering what he had started with.

I was so excited to get them back on the car, I mounted them while still at the shop.

You can see here where he attempted to repair the chipped area as best he could.

This brings me to a point I would like to discuss. I have a spare set of mint LHD EDM mirrors that I am considering having a mold made to help the community repair their LHD folding mirrors. I am still discussing this with Jeff about setting up some sort of feeler thread.

Clarification: These are non-power folding mirrors, yes?

I'm on a long term hunt for power folding mirrors that aren't broken and $500+.

yes sir non-power folding. I recommend you buy a blind spot mirror for the JDM Power folders and they are difficult to see out of.

I have a set of LHD Euro mirrors that have a little damage to them as well. A couple small chips that I don't think would be a problem, but there's a pretty good crack in one of them due to careless shipping from the guy I bought them from. Not sure how repairing that would work so I haven't attempted nor let anyone else attempt.

I was planning to swap glass, assuming they'd be a pretty straightforward swap. Any idea if they're different shapes or anything?

The mirror glass is identical for both LHD and RHD folders. The issue is that the mirror bases themselves (the part that bolts to the door) is what provides the angle orientation for LHD vs RHD. Basically in a LHD setup the passenger (or right side) mirror is angled towards the driver. For a RHD setup it is reversed, the passenger (or left side) mirror is angled towards the driver. So what ends up happening is you will be able to see perfectly fine out of (what would be your driver side) mirror but it will be almost impossible to get a clear view from the other side. Does that make sense?

Where are the replacement covers for the JDM mirrors? I've done some looking but not too deep yet. Need a set for mine.

Redfield makes them, you can get them from RHD Japan or Yahoo Auction Japan

Do you have any more details on the actual repair? Materials used. Procedure, or anything that could help someone trying to replicate this repair?

I messaged him about the process of the repair. He gave me a brief overview but I don't remember word for word. I'll post what he responds with here, or see if I can get him to post in this thread.

What I was told about this particular repair is that a good base is needed in order to repair it at all. If its too far gone then whoever does the work will have nothing to go off of when it comes time to reshape them. So keep them intact.

As I mentioned if there is enough interest, I am considering having a mold made off of my mint set and make FRP or Fiberglass copies of the covers themselves, similar to the Redfield sets only these will be for LHD mirrors.

I ended up using a longer screw in the housing that holds the assembly to the housing. Then I specked it out with washers back there to turn it inward so that I could see it from the left side of the car

I think covers would be a huge help to the community, I have been looking for a non cracked set of folders for a long time now.

Also keep a eye out on the UK Ebay Motors site as it is completely different from the US one and some sellers do ship to different countries.

Best way to repair is how the OP's were done (end method). Fill the void and use a flex body filler on the outside. They never crack again. I did a set a decade ago, and still perfect to this day.
