Just put on a shroud again, must be my 5th one with the Koyorad and on the way home made the decision to not run with the shroud anymore. As I rounded a corner, I gunned it in second and after hearing a large bang @ around 6000 RPM and getting sprayed with debris from the front and from under the cowell I said W T F was that? so after pulling over and hearing a dragging sound I opened the hood and found the fan totally disinegraed along with most of the shroud and it took 3 tubes of the rad with it and broke the undercover which was causing the dragging sound. I guess I have put off putting on my new under tray for too long and it will be on after the Koyorad gets fixed and after careful consideration decided its time to go shroudless.

Hmm, I'd suspect the fan clutch of locking up unless you saw cracks on the fan itself beforehand. I know after I had rebuilt my clutch it was waaaaaaay too locked up and the fan would likely overspin so I got a new clutch. You're dealing with my worst nightmare regarding that part :(

My condolensces good sir.

The fan was less than a year old but not original toyota. It didn't have any cracks at all, the cluth is from a landcruiser pick up and is extremely stiff. I can't validate about it locking up.

with a carburetor..the fan shroud helps direct air flow and cool down the carb.
dealing with fuel inj..may be the same concept..

Get a oem fan blade and use a ls400/7mgte blade or 2jgeclutch/2jgte blade. Can also machine a 7mgte clutch to fit as well.

Also it's pretty simple to rebuild a used clutch.

My ls400/7m setup is quite. Nothing like a older land cruiser or 7mgte when the clutch locks up and all you hear is wind.

How long since you checked the engine mounts?
Changed both about 2 weeks ago for same problem going too fast over a speed bump. They were shot from a security gate being raised under my car.

Defiantly keep an eye on them. This is the reason I lost my fan, shroud, and radiator along with irreparable damage to my hood on my 2JZ supra. Under hard acceleration one of the motor mounts gave out. lots of destruction and loud noises.

Were they new or used?

I had this happen to me twice with my 7M, and once with my 2JZ. not fun at all.
last time it happened my setup was: 2jz swapped mk3, BRAND NEW stock engine mounts, brand new koyo rad, brand new 2jz-gte clutch, used 2jz-ge blade (didnt appear to have any cracks), and a custom aluminum shroud.

Well it blew up and took out my new Koyo rad, which had less than a day of driving on it. I was extremely angry.

my new setup: same as above, but i have a different clutch/fan setup. the "modified ls400 fan clutch for 1j/2j swaps" from driftmotion, and a 7m-gte blade. Been 2 months on this setup, not one single hiccup.

I have that exact same rad on my 88. OEM fan, OEM shroud. No issues.. it was a very tight fit putting it in though.. lol. Had the rad for 2-3 years without an issue.. (7MGTE). Not sure why yours would do that.

I bought stock 89+ mounts from the dealer and will have them checked when I get it on the road tonight. The Fan clutch Im running now is the same size as the LS400, just stiffer from a heavier silicone I would guess. I run the LS400 in the winter. I'm wondering if the blade just failed from the RPM.

Heh, look at this guy, good example. :p

I'll admit though, I have a few more gray hairs every time I see posts like that...

If not the smarts, then the TIME, Mr. 37,000 posts. ;)

All this talk about mounts breaking or moving has me considering just keeping the solid mounts that are on the car now. It is a LITTLE less comfortable, but I'm not as worried about unwanted movements.

I'm running this same setup (2JZ, ls400 fan clutch, 7mgte fan) with a stock shroud and stock radiator. Are you still running a Koyo? I didn't think it would fit.
