Alright, this came up again in the N/A section, and I want some PROOF, once and for all, of why people claim the Toyota head gasket is better than the Fel-Pro gasket.

dunno why that is. fel-pro makes the stock gasket for toyota.
I don't think so.

Fel-Pro makes nice gaskets. In fact, they do make many OEM big name gaskets. Do they ship to Japan? I think not.

Who ever said they were bad anyway?

hmm...I thought "Ishino" was the stock Toyota supplier... I threw the fel-pro gasket to the side and bought a stock Toyota one, it seemed to be a bit beefier...IDK, it also felt kinda sticky, like it could have a light coating of some sort of sealant...also some green little "sealant lines" around a couple of the oil and coolant passages...

JUst my .02 . Supposidley toyota has redesighned the oem hg for the supra mkIII. It's supposed to be more durable. This is interesting to me especially because I am considering the toyota oem over the mhg, wich basically goes against my better judgement, because this is not a job I care to do anytime again, in the future, I want a permanent fix.

See? Everyone's saying Toyota > Fel-Pro - I get the impression this is just the usual regurgitation of information rampant in the Supra community. :3d_frown:

I'll post up pics of my Fel-Pro gasket tonight - anyone have pics of the stock Toyota one for comparision?

I can't trust a company that sells a cork oil pan gasket. Toyota FTW. :p

In reality, I'm sure they're both pretty decent, Fel-Pro makes decent gaskets, but for me, I'd rather spend the extra and get something I know will last, and while the Toyota HG certainly had not proven itself, I'd say go MHG.

Toyota gasket kit, MHG, and voila... all is good.

Yeah, all is good... unless you can't find a machine shop that CAN ACTUALLY cut your head to the specified RA.

fyi, I can't recommend Partsco in Gainesville... told me they could cut a 10RA, then when I go in to pick it up, it's clearly not a 'mirror finish' and when I ask them to check it with their profilometer.. 'Oh, the needle is broken, so take it or leave it'.

Not meaning to go on a rant, but I'm only running 10psi of boost, and don't plan on going more until I am able to rebuild the engine - a stock composite head gasket is fine with me, and I only ask about Fel-Pro vs stock Toyota, because my stock FelPro head gaskets in my 3.1L Camaro held up, even when things got bad enough to heat up and CRACK the 2nd ring land of 2 pistons.

hmm as for the toyota gaskey set, didnt someone say to use this gasket maker thing? i forget who it was and what its called. Also i saw a felpro vs stock toyota one. the felpro actually looked beefier then the one form 1988. its probably due to wear but still, someone must be thinking...

Artmo: The Cometic is the most forgiving of the MHG's for surface smoothness and if you're decking the block anyway may as well install it now! (who knows when the "crank the boost bug" will bite!)

CS: Don't know if they do one for the 7M but I think it was Felpro many years ago had a Composite HG with piano wire O rings inside the firerings that worked brilliantly on boosted motors!
