Some jerk may have stuck something into the lock when you weren't around. Also...the tumblers inside wear out eventually, and then the key won't go in, or not turn, or I've even seen one that the key would not come out. Sounds like its time to remove the lock and replace with new.

I would consult a locksmith about keying the new one to the ignition key so you'll still be a one-key car.

Let this be a lesson to everyone....lube the locks and ignition about every 3 months. I use a squirt of "Prestone" brand silicone spray, cause its watery, the 'carrier' evaporates away leaving the lube, and it does not seem to collect dust like wd40. :icon_razz

Also...a brand new key used with an old lock (or ignition) will wear out the tumblers inside very quickly, because the tumblers are worn down, and the edges on the new key are sharper than the old original key.

Brass keys are best, as they will wear down sooner than the tumblers, so the lock will work longer. A 'caring' locksmith will wirebrush the new key so the edges aren't so sharp.

How the F#$%# does this fool know all this, you ask yourself.....cause I got friends in all the right places. :biglaugh:

one night in my younger days, and in my MKII, I went clubbing all by myself. I was all by myself, and just divorced. Well after getting pretty drunk, I started playing some pool. I kept drinking, and played several games. This continued until I played a guy who I had seen arrive in a POS Mustang GT (80's style). He kicked my ass all over the pool table. But, I got a little cocky and asked if he wanted a double or nothing..........except this time he had to beat me on a nearby straight abandonned road. He agreed, and we went to get in our cars. When I got to mine, my key didn't fit my driver side for some reason, so I tried the passenger's side...same thing. I searched the parking lot, but no other cars like mine. I came back and tried again, and discovered that someone had tried to knock the lock cylinders out of both doors in an attempt to break in. They did not succeed at that............but they may have saved my life. I had no business driving, and the wait for a friend with a slim jim gave me a little time to sober. Oh yea, I paid the guy the 5 bucks I owed him from the pool table, and told him he'd get his ass whoopin at a later date. Never saw him again.

Sorry I can't be of much help technically here. I think the lock swap would not work, because the linkage hardware would be backwards. I have an extra set of door locks, that I can't sell with an ignition. I'll PM you details.

well I'll tell you what...

I'm just about to do a writeup on how to rebuild your own locks with pictures and the works! lucky you. I just need to find the time to do it tonight or tomorrow.

the little flapper door is probably broken, or you have a seized up tumbler. Lubing helps.....sometimes. Usually I take everything apart and sand it down and re-lube. Once a year.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

That would be greatly appreciated, billspreston01. I've been lubing mine like crazy, but the flapper door is jammed. I was able to pry it to the point where I think it's broken off inside, so now I have to try and get it out. I'm thinking that maybe the lock will still work, without the flapper door in the way. It will get frozen much easier without it, but I always garage my car anyways. Please keep us updated on that diagram :)

if you broke the actualy lock cylinder then...you're gonna need to replace it or go without the door. You can go without it, but it would be a LOT easier for dirt and such to get in there and jam it up again. When you lube the lock any dirt/dust that gets in there is gonna stick to the lube. (not suggested)

I'm gonna try and do it tonight. I was gonna do it last night but my pictures wouldn't upload to my computer :-/
