This is pretty much true. Several years ago my dad needed some yard work done on some duplexes he owned. He found two or three street bums who were holding signs saying they needed work, or something to that effect. (but what they really wanted was handouts) He said he'd pay them $10 an hour. After an hour of work they collected $10 and left. Didn't work any longer than that. It's quite possible they were making more on the streets...

What part of Portland are you in cadman? I'm in the Beaverton area this summer until I go back to school mid-September.

I actually live in Oregon City. If you know where Redland is, that's a lot closer to where I live. Out in the country

I have met quite a fiew people here on the boards that live in the Portland area. I met one guy from here at the PIR drags. This is pretty cool!

i take those fukers at the self car wash no joke... everytime i wash a car i check. i usually geta bout 4 dollars as well.. i mean it adds up i guess. i take them home and put it in the bottle pile lol...

I haven't even seen that many at once in toronto. After a night of clubbing or going to bars downtown on the way home traffic get kind of backed up. They wait in the middle of the road at lights to get change from every car that stops. It happens almost every time we go down.

that was the thing, ive seen bums there before, but 14, i actually counted. It was amazing, i couldnt beleve it, looked like the downtown eastside. next time ill take a picture

I know it's a stereotype, but I usually tell myself "Don't give them any money. Some of them make more cash than you, and the ones that don't will probably spend what you give them on booze or drugs".
If you are enjoying this thread at all, you need to see the movie "Falling Down". There is a scene where Michael Douglas has an encounter with a bum, and the guy tries to lie to him and say he was in 'Nam. He was not old enough. He was asking for anything from him. Well he said he wasn't going to give him any money, and told him why, and then gave him a sandwich. The guy threw it at him as he walked away. It really reminds me of some of the stories you guys are bringing up.

hahaha, it really is isnt it! i just have is becasue im always asking stupid questions, and if i wasnt so retarded, i could probably figure them out on my own. lol. I was downtown one night, and i saw a bum sitting on top of a post box, had a pot sitting on the ground, and a sign of a fishing rod, and the sign read something like " i need to get high, so give me money for pot" i laughed, and then tried to buy the man a joint, but i couldnt find one, and i didnt have one on me either. I figured, you make me laugh, you deserve something.
