Yeah it's definitely got a taupe or bronze tint.

I just haven't been able to get a color code/part # yet.

As I said, I'm trying to settle the "neighbor who backed into my car" case, and I need to know whether I'm looking at a complete set of moldings if I can't find a match. I checked with the local dealer and called some others and they don't have a grey molding in stock to compare mine with.

It's bad enough that my fender got crunched, but now I have to fight it out with the insurance company to put it back the way it was. They have things on their estimate like "r&r front molding....wtf? You can't r&r a f'd up molding. No mention of inner fenderwell replacement (also f'd up) etc. etc. Where do they come up with this crap? They gave me an estimate that was about 60% of what it will cost me to fix it right. Big surprise huh? So if you add to that a complete set of moldings...I'm so screwed it's not even funny. All because my idiot neighbor couldn't look where he was going while backing up.

Thanks to all those who have commented. I appreciate it because I'm trying to figure this out and everyones comments are information on this are helpful (even though I haven't quite resolved what color this thing is yet) .

If this is going through insurance, they can figure this out. There is no need for you to worry about whether a whole set of moldings need to be ordered or not. They should fix correctly in either case.

ahhhh ok...

had to look it up in the EPC< as the part number you gave of the back of the molding (75612 14110) was NOT matching up with the earlier years part numbers

When was your car made? Look in the door jam (I think that's wear it is).

Also keep in mind that they might yellow with age as well.

Are you sure the part number was "75612 14110?" Was there any numbers after it? I don't think the color code is usually on the part, which sucks, but make sure on the part number as that part number doesn't seem to be right for a pre-89 car (which would be 75612-14100)

You are right Poodles! (it was kind of dirty, and one of the 0's looked like a 1 to me) Here's a shot of the actual # as it appears on the molding.

Car was built on: NOV/86, according to build plate on door. So that would make it an early 1987 model, which matches the paperwork and everything I know about the car (it’s been in my family since my mom drove it off the showroom floor in 1987).

It’s not a case of yellowing though. This molding matches the shade and hue of the paint. I checked some old pictures at my parents of the car when it was brand new and the moldings look exactly the same color.

Also, I'm convinced this is not a grey molding, and have compared it with other gray objects. It has a taupe tint to it. I have even asked friends neighbors etc., and everyone agrees, not straight grey. I'm trying to locate a grey molding for comparison but so far no luck.

Doesn't look "straight grey" to me or anyone else who has actually looked at it in person.

I dunno (sighs)...

The price of a full set might write off the average Mk3 though ;)

Yeah, I've been looking for a parts car for the last 6 mos or so and I can attest to that...but maybe that'll get some of the shitboxes off the road that aren't exactly boosting the good example's value.
