ARP Stud Threads

Okay, i bought a kit of ARP's off eBay - and while they were used, they were in good condition and you can apparrently use them again. And they were only $70.

So anyway, they arrived yesterday and at first glance they're fine, and i've had a go threading the nuts on to see if they're all okay, one is a bit stiff - gets to a point and becomes too hard to thread on by hand - but i suspect putting some torque on it will solve that. However, theres one stud that has slight burring on the very beginning of the thread, so the nut wont go on, or will go all of 2mm and then start trying to go on wonky.

What would you guys suggest using to clean/recut the thread at the very beginning?

Looks like you could wire wheel it, but obviously i dont want to do any damage to it.

The threads on both sides of the stud are 12x1.25 Go to sears and buy a Rethreading kit ~$40. Do not use a tap and die set. It can eat the threads and make them weaker. I had the same problem you did and it worked great for me. The rethreading kit also works great to chase the block threads.

I tried wire brushing to death.

Just pass it threw the tap and die and that should clean them more then the brush. Just run one threw a tap and die before cleaning (make sure to use oil!).

Hah! I R TEH WIN! *ahem*

Turns out i had a 14mm ring spanner and a hex socket bit that would fit. put the ratchet into 'undo' mode with the hex bit on and the 14mm ring spanner on the nut. Swivelly Swivelly...and the nut goes on okay and not cross threaded :)

Probably just because the threads aren't lubed yet and my grip is failing that it was tough to do with my hands....seems to be all okay now though!

The block will be cleaned out thoroughly, no worries on that.

I was test fitting the nuts on the head end to make sure the threads were all okay - they're not perfect, but 12/14 are, and the other two just needed a little more torque than my hand on the nut could give them to shift them. Theres no resistance on either once they're located.

I'll post a photo in a minute of the 'damaged' threads :)

thread repair kit from sears sucks...ask me how I know

nothing like having the repair tap SNAP in your block, sad thing is it was pretty soft and easy to drill out and use an easy out on...

I could swear the threads on on side of the stud where different than the other, but I could be wrong...

I have a snap on tap and die set. I dont use it much, but every time I use it.. its worth the 140 bux i paid for it.

I HIGHLY reccomend one.
