Alright… So I finally got everything together on this swap and now it won’t start. The car cranks over and seems like it’s trying to catch but it just won’t. Any feedback would be awesome.

Points of interest:

1. I had the wiring harness done by phoenix tuning so I’m running under the assumption that everything is wired 100% correctly.

2. I pulled the first plug and I am definitely getting spark.

3. I hear the fuel pump running and the plugs/cylinders reak of fuel.
A. Is it possible to flood the cylinders?

4. Not counting VSV’s (single turbo) all plugs are accounted for but 3
A. one on the passenger front which I assume was for the hydrofan (I’m running clutch)
B. one on the front of the driver side which I assume is for the oil level sensor (originally front sump)
C. Not an actual plug but inside the manifold there is a second throttle plate in the front… the sensor that is sitting on the outside of that plate… I assume this would be for traction control and remain unhooked for this swap.

5. I re-checked the following grounds:
A. firewall to exhaust manifold
B. firewall to rear tow hook (which is how it came on the motor so I utilized it)
C. body to bellhousing
D. body to tranny mount
E. negative battery terminal to body
F. 2 wire harness grounds off the intake manifold (I believe they are currently bolted to the lower mani)

6. there is one engine code… 78… which is for the fuel pump computer. I am assuming that since you do not run the mk4 fuel computer in this swap that will be a constant code.

7. I am running SAFC (also wired by tweak) and have set it up accordingly but everything is set to zero (meaning no adjustment?) so I wouldn’t think this would make a difference.

8. Double checked timing according to tsrm and it seems to be correct… I don’t have a timing light however.

9. I know I should theoretically check compression but that will probably be the last thing I look at.

10. Tried to start full throttle… same response

11. Unplugged TPS… same response.

Just for the sake of closure... It was the SAFC... Followed the set/reset directions (here: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/afc/index.html) with a few slight modifications and it cranked up. Runs like a bag of balls at the moment but it's definitely an improvement.

Only major difference on that settings page is that the map is "pressure" as opposed to "hotwire" as they have listed and the in/out is 1/1 according to some other posts I've read. I'm not at all sure about the throttle point settings but I used the ones listed and the car is running.

He said it was his SAFC.

If you have not spark and fuel, check timing and compression.

If you still cannot get it, create a thread and we will see what's up after you list everything you checked and what is going on.

Checked spark and fuel, checked cam timing, checked and resolved codes. Only code was cam sensor. Checked and it had a lot of oil in the plug from the cam covers leaking before I rebuilt it. I sprayed air and reconnected.. No more codes but still no start.

So you have fuel and spark?

Ign timing is controlled by the ecu.

Yes and yes.

I know it is, and the ECU gets its input from the cam and crank sensors, which is why I asked if that one cam sensor should be my first suspect..

Edit: It wants to start so bad. I get a few puffs and it starts for maybe a second or two then dies. Then at one point when trying to start I got another code 12 from it for that one cam sensor again. I'll see if my buddy with a 1JZ will let me swap sensors to see if my car will start.. I'm going over to my car now and going to try to ohm out that sensor.
