Before I get lambasted for not searching again, let me say that the search engine throws out the terms "12v" and "mod". I was able to find threads about doing the mod however, but thats not my question.

My question is, is doing this mod safe for a stock pump of unknown age? Some of you know Im having heat soak issues with Lucy, and I was thinking about 12v modding for the purpose of testing and evaluation. Its hard to tell what pumps people are running when they say they have done this.

I just dont have the extra money right now for a new pump so
I dont want to ruin the pump. Is it safe to run this mod for an indefinate amount of time on the stocker?

My pump is at 220K, probably run for approx. 5k @ the 12v mod and never has it failed. I would like to say though that once you do this, for some reason your gas guage will not read correctly. Mine never goes up past 3/4 mark; and once it gets past half way it drops to the E and I just drive and drive until the gas light comes on.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, and lagged, its mainly for testing and tuning and trying to aleviate some possibilities. I dont expect it to solve any problems neccessarily.

LOL JAV, I said I already know "how" to do it, just wanted opinions on pump life. I dont actually plan to run this mod permanently, Im trying to eliminate the stock relay/resistor/wiring from the mix to see if I have a wiring short or other issue in the stock setup. This heat soak issue I have been having with Lucy is kicking my ass and Im running out of options to try to solve it.

Next time lucy wont start, crack the fuel line or cold start line and see if there is pressure, you can jump Fp & +B on the diag connector too, that will bypass the relays and run the pump.

yeah took, I did that. It seems I do have pressure, but short of a fuel pressure gauge I dont knonw what kind of pressure. And I jumpered the B+ and Fp connectors the last time she wouldnt start and it didnt seem to make any difference. To be honest what Im trying to do is see if this makes the problem worse. Im actually beginning to suspect that the system is actually "over fueling" and in a sence flooding the engine.

I really just need to pony up the money for an AFPR. I think that would go a long way towards helping me diagnose the problem.

Hmmmm, you actually need a gauge, not a reg. It could have been a small amount of residual pressure. And you need to see the pressure when you jumper, because if its the pump itself, that wont help it start. If the pump is starting to fail, it can act up hot, it will keep running , but once you shut it off, it dont wanna kick till it cools off. Pull the hose off the 3000 pipe when it wont start, spray a little carb clean in the intake, see if it tries to kick over. Especially IIRC you said in the other thread there was damage to tank or pump or something like that.

ok ok lets back up here, i think you are barking up the wrong tree so to speak with your problem diagnosis.

could you just detail again exactly what is wrong and what you are trying to fix?

tookwik': I meant a AFPR W/gauge (since most of them come that way) Basically I need a gauge, but would like an AFPR, so why not just get both at the same time. And yes I have spark. I was thinking about getting a can of starter fluid for the next time it happens to see if I can at least fire it off and maybe keep it running that way.

lagged: I could but it would take all week just to type it all up again. this thread covers pretty much what Ive done so far http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27913
and this thread details the original problem

so basically once in a while it dosnt start?

does it crank?

does it simply click?

does the car have power?

it would help a lot if you could simply detail your problem. doing the 12v mod isnt going to help you, i seriously doubt that the car is being "over fueled" or whatever you alluded to before.

i do not think you are going in the right direction to fix things.

if you could just rewrite what your problem is, with just the symptoms only i know that i or someone else can help you fix your problem.

Lagged, bro...thanks for your concern, but I detailed the condition in the other threads. This was simply a question about how the stock pump handles the 12v mod. Im doing the mod for various reasons, and like I said it wont be a permanent change. I think my question was asked and answered. But thanks anyway for your concern.
