Nicer? Define "nicer".... it's entirely relative. Personally, I never noticed much of a difference. The GTE's exhaust is only .25" larger in diameter... not a huge difference in the end. It might make it a little louder, but that's about it where sound is concerned.
?? WTF? ROFL!
Yeah, it's often valve clearances another possibility which I've heard can cause tapping and knocking sounds are exhaust leaks at the head.
As long as there are no leaks and the baffling inside the muffler and resonator are intact then yes, the stock system will be quieter than 99% of what you'll find aftermarket.
Yeah, if the CC is going dark when the light switch is at the last or second to last position it's most likely the dimmer... that or the tail light fuse or wiring.
Just noticed something else in your post... There are three positions to the headlight switch other than off, let's clarify: So when you turn the light switch to the SECOND position to turn on the marker lights, the button backlights light up? But when you turn it the rest of the way to the...
If the CC is going dark once the lights are turned on the issue isn't the cluster... well, not unless there are more problems. Harness is a definite possibility, but start with the easy things to check first.
A couple things, no CEL does not mean there are no error codes... check them using the info posted here: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/TechTips/engine_error_codes.aspx
Second, you need to jumper the same pins that you jump to check diagnostic codes when setting the timing and the proper...
If it's always off a consistent amount, move the needle. If it's always off by a percentage but the odo is reading correctly, adjust the spring tension in the back of the gauge.

I compared the housings, axles and gears of the W58 and the R154 parts which I have, but checking to see if either had the spindle eccentrically placed didn't occur to me. I don't have one to look at now, hopefully someone else can check and let us know.
While we're at it, does anyone have a...
The housing's the same but the gears are of a different diameter. The R-154's driven gear is of a smaller diameter, so while a w58's driven gear may work when placed into a R154, the R154's gear just spins freely in the W58.
I had thought that might be the case a while back when I was running a 3.91 LSD... sent a PM to Marlincrawler, but never heard back and just didn't follow it up from there.... if one's available that'll be great.
Do they? Never knew that (obviously)... happen to know what counts? Are they for different vehicles? or did they change the internal gearing which drives it at some point?
R-154 driven gears don't work in a W-58... at all... at least not in mine... I've tried.
The only thing other than a complete tranny swap or a swapped diff which would cause this is a shift in the speedo itself. If this is the case your odo should still read correctly, just the speed will be...

If you're only looking for loud, go for it, but doing so generally causes power loss. This has been discussed ad nauseum, try searching helmholtz, resonator and dyno.
