Make sure the machinist is done by race weekend. They can be very grouchy after the Daytona 500 if their "boy" doesn’t win. This is assuming the guy likes NASCAR but we are talking blue collar Alabama folk so I am willing to bet he does.... :)

I would do the headgasket and valve stem seals while you have it out of the car. It is a junkyard motor. My 2J had a lot of the water jackets blogged with crud and the valve stem seals were really hard.
I tilted the engine on its side with the head angled down. Kinked the corner of the water hose with vice grips to make a little opening. Just sprayed and scraped with wire brushes and screw drivers. It turned out really nice. When I was done, I just used compressed air to dry everything. I...
Dang Elvis, that sucks. I got nervous and pulled the head on mine while it was still on the stand. I had about 7 or 8 cooling jacks completely blocked. There was a ton of rust/sludge in the coolent passages. I have no doubt I would have blown the HG on my 2J as well. At least you caught it...
