Pull #1 plug grab a piece of small diameter fuel hose that's a loose fit in the plug hole,(about a foot long) turn the crank and watch the hose rise making note of where it stops and and just before it starts back down this is TDC then compare the notch on the balancer.
In 99 I was rear ended by a Holden Commodore (a few 100 KG's lighter than a Mk3) Like Nick my car had a couple of scratches and it peeled one of the Pinstripes off the rear bumper as the tow bar took the brunt of the impact.

If it's Stenno in Australia things may be a little different for a LHD car as your firewall is a different shape due to the AirCon.

Uppers are non replacable as far as I know you have to go genuine and buy the complete A Arm as they're one piece.
Joel is correct though there are minimal loads on the uppers so they don't really wear out.
Lowers are an easy fix :)
