What will kill the shaft and bearings will be the PmoI as the shaft tries to slow and accelerate the larger wheel as you get on and off the throttle.
It's the diameter of the new wheel that causes this change and as this is set there's little you can do to "fix" it.
Sharp edges tend to cause turbulant flow not to mention are prone to fatigue and cracking so I always try and put nice radius's on parts I make where possible!

If the line to the WASTEGATE actuator is leaking it would let the motor overboost and maybe detonate but fuel cut "should" prevent that happening.

Why bother just upgrade it to modern gear making sure you keep all the old crap in a box to refit if you're worried about keeping the car original.
For that matter mount some modern gear in a rack and slide it under the seat and use a remote to drive it leaving the old original crap in place ;)
