Depends on what is important to you I guess.
I prefer minimal pressure drop low system volume so you're not inducing lag not to mention the stealth factor and that it doesn't obstruct airflow to the main radiator as much.
I sort of doubt it can be done on standard cams Jake I had mine hard face welded so they're on stock base circle.
This keeps the shims to a minimum thickness as I always intended on revving mine I didn't want to be adding weight to my lightweight valvetrain.
I ended up using the one piece...

I think for your goals this would be the starting point if not larger!
Might be a bit tired and loose so the pump can't get enough suction/provide enough pressure when it starts at 500 rpm the clatter you're hearing is the rod bearings slowly destroying themselves. :(
