Can't put my hands on my JE sheet but I'm pretty sure for 2000 series aluminium pistons it was 4 thou total, Ross are 6 thou but rattle when cold if machined to that.
Mk3: No probs +1qt is fine and not even almost near the crank with the motor stopped, with it running there's probably 1>1.5 qts pumped around the inside and top end.

It's a bandaid pure and simple....
If you need a higher octane fuel by all means run one but if the goal is a pump gas tune do it right and not by crossing your fingers and hoping everything in the Meth kit will continue to function.
If you keep IAT's low and timing conservative it's doable.
You may not reach the same peak outputs as you could with more timing but that will get you too close to the detonation threshold.
When you have it tuned they'll probably use a pair of electronic ears to listen for detonation then...
