Dreams: If it was 2>3 qt's low good chance you've lost the Oil Wedge at some point allowing the Crank to touch a bearing which is the start of Rod Knock :(
JJ: Yep Personally I wouldn't even bother with an Oil Test at this point, I lost a motor that was only 1 qt down on an interstate trip...
Done it many times on my own
Get a bud to help
Use thick Cardboard to protect the car
Take it slowly it's NOT a race
Stop look and check then lower a bit and repeat
Engine leveller is a must due to the length and angle needed to get it into the bay.
The slow rise/overflow is normal due to the fluid expanding as it gets hot.
For peace of mind and to give you a known starting point grab the test kit and run it.
