Hmm..I was told by a few engine builders that non-detergent oil is fine for engine break-in. I only used it the first 50 miles after i had done the initial start-up oil change. After 50 miles I changed to 5-30 dino. Worked fine for my engine :dunno:

Maybe it was the block side of the HG that was leaking? Whats compression look like? Bubbles in the coolant or milkshake oil cap? What're you running for a cooling fan?

Any crap 5w30 non-synthetic oil you can find at the gas station or walmart. I even went so far as to get 30w non-detergent oil to break an engine in that i built before. Good luck!
