Diff rebuild by "pro" not going well

I just tried to get the best preload and backlash. Results :, I need to buy more shims. It seems a total shim thickness of 5.73 , 5.76 and 5.79 is simply not enough preload. 5.82 is just ok, I wager that 5,85mm is the sweet spot, but at 5.82, the shim is very hard to knock in already. With a...

I have not disassemble the center part, but plan to have a look. So far it looks ok, the most I would tighten up is 0.1mm on each side. It is an open diff 4 pinion setup with 2 side gears. The spider gears look really good. I just got news the carrier shims I ordered arrived at my home. I can...

Diff rebuild by "pro" not going well

While waiting for the shims, i decide to inspect the spider gears: There is a little up to down slop on the side gears, and I can slide the side shims . However, I do not detect any backlash on the side gears, even a tiny movement on one side gear moves the opposite side gear, even with one...

Remember when I said I was gonna leave pinion preload as it was? I lied. I figured since I need to wait for the shims to arrive and thats about 8 to 10 days away, I might as well work on the pinion preload again. I removed the carrier, and pinion, and resanded the spacer the 4th time, and got a...

Piratetip, I followed your method of sanding the weir spacer back end on a granite table and I got the preload down. I had to do it three times, but I finally got it feeling tight enough, it is on the lower end of the scale, probably 4in.lb only, The starting torque to get it moving is quite...

Guess I would have to sand the spacer then. For the carrier preload and backlash, I plan to buy at least 3 combinations of which I will pre calculate based on the current carrier shims and make an educated estimate. No wonder the shop guys here will simply not get this right, they are too damn...

Piratetip, the problem is the staked nut for sure. I have managed to fix the thread front the best I can and the new standard nut I used for setup only rolls on easily without snagging. I also very lightly oiled the bearings, so now it does not catch anymore. I only oiled them once, I never...

Here is a wonky google translate from my android phone. Based on the 3.1i North American specifications, the ZEEK 3.11 was tuned in Los Angeles and reimported. In the early 1990s, there was a complete A70 Supra car. Equipped with a twin-turbo 7M-GTEU in a macho body, it was hitting out power...

Diff rebuild by "pro" not going well

I worked 3 hours on the diff and struggled to get the preload, it was either too much or no preload, or not enough. I was down to 0.71mm on the shims, and was about to try to get 0.65mm, then the old nut jammed up as I was trying to remove it. It chewed up the threads on the pinion from the...

I brought the diff to my workplace and things aint going well. First, for the life of me, I cannot get a proper backlash reading. I tried and tried for an hour and still couldnt get a consistent reading. I have a feeling I am not putting it at the correct angle. So I just removed the carrier...

Thank You Bru. I made my own flange holding tool. I just received my beam torque wrench I did some testing not on some bolts, and found that the force required to get the needle to even go to 1Nm is quite noticable. According to TSRM 2.2 Nm is the maximum total preload allowed so the max...

Yes Piratetip, it is a 4.556. I know it is awfully high for you 7M guys, but 1G engine is mated to a 4.3 for MT and 4.556 to AT. At 62mph in OD, The 1G engine RPM is 2800. At 112mph its 4800rpm. The 7M spins at 4000rpm at 112mph. here is a resource for GA70/GZ20...

Guys, it doesnt look good so far. I drained the oil and the drain plug was dark with some metal shavings, the oil was also dark yellow. and the diff only has 10 to 12 hours of use. The drain plug residue The diff also has noticable backlash, my guess is 1mm. I will be inspecting the gears...

Anyone have their front subframe out now ? Need some measurements

Perfect, thanks. I might just make a flat 2mm rubber washer 47mm OD and 21mm ID and just use the top of the nub, to press on the top hat.

I was hoping that a 3 jaw puller would suffice, or perhaps I wouldnt need to remove the inner pinion bearing, hopefully the inner shim is correct, if not I would just get some one to press it out for me. Update, just went behind, found this rack pinion type press.
